There appears to be a neverending cascade of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct allegations flying around these days. The explosion that resulted from the outing of Hollywood power broker, Harvey Weinstein has become an entire movement that has empowered women all over the world to come forward with their stories about being sexually mishandled by men in powerful places. The latest person to land on the hot seat is the long-time radio personality, John DeBella, who has been accused of sexual harassment. It appears that one of DeBella’s former sidekicks on his show has come forward to accuse him of sexual harassment in the form of a lawsuit.
But who is John DeBella anyway?
1. He Has Got Deep Philly Roots
If you are a native of the City of Brotherly Love, then you know exactly who John DeBella is. It gains mainstream popularity in the city as a part of the WMMR’s Morning Zoo. He became the number one rated morning D.J. until he was finally overtaken by shock D.J. Howard Stern. Speaking of which, am I the only one who is surprised that Stern has not faced allegations of sexual misconduct? Anyway, DeBella has a very large and loyal following in the Philadelphia area.
2. He Was Huge Peter Gabriel Fan
DeBella was not shy about admitting how big of a fan he was of the Peter Gabriel, a former frontman for the group Genesis, that also featured Phil Collins. DeBella never wasted an opportunity to talk about how much he admired Gabriel – always seizing an opportunity to discuss his favorite songs. People just came to expect that Peter Gabriel would come up in any conversation involving DeBella.
3. He Apparently Took Things to Far with Jennifer Neill
On the air, Jennifer Neill was known as Jen Posner, and she was a longtime sidekick of the DeBella. However, on February 19th of this year, she dropped a bombshell when she filed a lawsuit that alleged that she was the subject of multitudinous encroachments upon her personal sovereignty by DeBella as he made numerous sexual advancements. DeBella has not spoken publicly, but a spokesperson for the disc jockey says that he vehemently denies all of the allegations.
4. He Demands Loyalty in His Circle
Based on the allegations levied by Neill, DeBella’s employees and others in his circle knew about what was happening but they did nothing to stop it. She asserts that what was being done to her happened where people were aware of it, but everyone turned the other way and pretended as if they did not see what was going on. She said that she felt helpless to do anything about it at the time, but she is definitely doing something about it now.
5. This Allegations Could Effectively End His Career
If things play out the way they have played out in similar situations in the past, it is likely that the radio station and all of his sponsors will look to distance themselves from the radio personality until he can wiggle himself out from underneath the weight of these allegations. If it is proven that she is telling the truth, his career in media is likely over with.
