Can you imagine SIRI as a 1980’s computer program? People would have flipped I’m guessing if this had been possible back in the 80’s. Of course the software necessary for SIRI would have been a lot more extensive than it is now and the effort of actually getting SIRI to work would be so exhaustive that some people would like quit before they even got to use SIRI. Thinking of how long it would have taken the program to analyze everything and respond back then is like trying to remember what it was like to download a moderately complicated program back in the day. It would have taken forever just to get an answer and even then there’s no telling if you’d get the answer you wanted.
The voice of SIRI also seems like it would have been something that sounded like a woman that had been malnourished and then forced to speak through a mouthful of water. In other words it was barely intelligible. Thankfully the programming for SIRI didn’t become available until the 2000’s, and a Beta version wasn’t released until 2011. Since then SIRI has been making leaps and bounds forward and been integrated into nearly everything it possibly can in an attempt to make people’s lives easier. It does work for the most part so long as you speak clearly and give the voice recognition something to work with so that SIRI can determine just what you’re asking for or what you need.
But back in the 80’s the technology was still so far behind that attempting to use the current microphones that were available would have been an effort in futility. People do remember what computers were like back then right? You couldn’t just pick them up and move them around like you can now, and a cell phone with SIRI on it would have been looked at as a thing delivered from an advanced alien race. The technology simply wasn’t there yet and the idea of it might have been in the making but it hadn’t yet become anything but a far flung thought that had yet to fully materialize. Thinking that SIRI could have worked in the 80’s is a funny idea really since to be honest it would have been one of the worst disasters to ever be developed most likely.
A lot of people need to remember that what was thought to be so great in the world of computers back then is what toddlers learn on these days. What we thought was cutting edge is now the type of programming that is used to teach children and those that have no computer skills whatsoever. Yes, there are still people out there like that. Thinking that SIRI could have been of any use is like saying that a wood-burning cook stove could outdo a modern day, electric stove with various heat settings. It’s always nice to think about the past, but it’s necessary to remember that everything that’s come thus far has done so at the time it was needed.
