Showrunner Ryan Murphy just made a honey of a deal at $300 million after signing with Netflix. So who’s next? Lately it seems that Netflix has been going a bit spend-crazy when it come to acquiring talented individuals to create new and innovative shows that will continue to allows its number offered programs to swell as subscribers keep pouring in. In fact it’s been spending money hand over fist in an effort to remain atop the hill when it comes to streaming networks, and so far it’s been doing pretty much everything it can in order to make sure that it’s not going anywhere. Of course given that Disney is eventually going to be pulling all of its programs from Netflix this is a wise course for the network since they’ll need something to take over for when Disney pulls EVERYTHING it owns from their lineup, which includes everything owned by 21st Century Fox as well.
I would assume that’s the case since I don’t see Disney leaving a lot, if anything, behind when it goes. Whether Disney’s own personal streaming service does any good, which you can guess that it will, or whether Netflix can remain a contender once Disney streaming goes live is hard to say. At this point both are giants in their respective fields and the current signing of Murphy could be just another way for Netflix to keep their heads above water when they look a substantial amount of their shows and movies. They might not be all Disney-related material but there’s enough to think that there’s going to be a sizable gap in their programming list.
Netflix is no doubt attempting to snap up as much talent as they can in order stay alive and stay dominant, and so far it’s working. They’re getting some of the best showrunners, some of the greatest talent, and some of the most well-known actors to come work them on a regular basis so you know they’re shelling out a good deal of money. Whether they’re still in the black or leaning into the red as it was surmised a while back is hard to tell since that kind of discussion isn’t always made public until it’s too late. But as of right now you can guess that they’re watching their bottom line closely and doing their very best to hang on if they sense that kind of threat coming.
Right now however Netflix seems to be on an upswing as they continue to gather in as many people that can help the network as possible. Ryan Murphy is just one of several that has come to work with Netflix to produce new material and content that’s exclusive to the network. Considering what he’s already done in his career and the kind of success he’s managed to gather to himself he should be a home run for Netflix and a serious draw for at least the next five years. Some think that in five years Netflix will have proved themselves to be yet another titan within the industry if they haven’t already. Time will tell.
