Five Things You Didn’t Know about “5 Seconds of Summer”

5 Seconds of Summer (otherwise styled as 5SOS) has gained a lot of traction in the musical world over the past few years. This band started out on YouTube, posting up song covers of contemporary artists from 2011 and 2012. After some time, they gained a much bigger fanbase when they toured with One Direction.

From humble beginnings, this pop-rock band has risen high in the music industry. They have released several albums and singles and have met with a lot of success in their careers so far. Do you want to learn more about this excellent band? If so, read on to learn Five Things You Didn’t Know about 5 Seconds of Summer.

They Are Misrepresented as a Boy Band

In the media, 5SOS is often known as a boy band, not a rock band. However, members of the group — which consists of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin — have spoken out against this label. They also stray from boy band norms by writing their own songs, playing instruments, and avoiding a focus on dance. Despite this, they still have a huge female following.

They Established Their Own Record Label

5 Seconds of Summer is the driving force behind Hi or Hey Records. Since its establishment in 2014, the band has released all of their music through their own label (partnering up with Capitol records). They signed their first band a year later — pop/punk/rock quartet Hey Violet.

Their First Big-Name Tour was with Hot Chelle Rae

Though it was their One Direction world tour that brought them most of their fame, they also played on Hot Chelle Rae’s Whatever World Tour. They were one of the two opening acts (alongside Cher Lloyd). It was a huge honor for 5SOS to open for Hot Chelle Rae, and it definitely helped to get their name out there. It was only a short while later that they got their big break.

They Have a Huge Variety of Influences

This band has named Good Charlotte, Green Day, Nirvana, Blink-182, and All-Time Low as some of their biggest influences. Many other bands have played a sizeable role in the creation of their unique sound. One thing is certain: the sound of 5 Seconds of Summer is not easy to replicate and is wholly their own. It is a combination of all of their influences and their own personal soul that they put into the music.

They Like to Play Paintball

A good game of paintball can help anyone cut loose. Though many boy bands spend a lot of their time being hounded by media, judged on their apparent ‘cuteness’, and are often expected to be sensitive, every man needs to get a bit rough once in a while. The boys from 5 Seconds of Summer do it through paintball. In fact, they even faced off against One Direction a few years back, in a physical Battle of the Bands.
