Paul Marciano is an American businessman who is best-known for his role as one of the co-founders of Guess Jeans. However, his name has come up in the news because he has been accused of inappropriate behavior by Kate Upton, which has had an immediate impact on his corporation. Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Paul Marciano:
Born in Debdou, Morocco
Marciano was born in a town called Debdou, which can be found in what is called the Oriental region of Morocco. The town is interesting in that it used to be considered a center of learning for Moroccan Jews, so much so that it exported rabbis to other Moroccan Jewish communities at the end of the 19th century as well as at the start of the 20th century. With that said, that is no longer the case because much of its Moroccan Jewish population spread out into the local towns when the French Protectorate was established.
Was In a Serious Motorcycle Accident
When Marciano was still a teenager, he and one of his friends were involved in a serious motorcycle accident with an oncoming car. As a result, he was confined to a wheelchair for a period of seven months, though he was fortunate in that he regained the full use of his limbs after eighteen months even though he had been told that he would never walk again. With that said, the motorcycle accident had lasting consequences, as shown by how his absence meant that he was not re-accepted into his old school.
Lived In a Kibbutz
Since he couldn’t go back to school to complete his education, Marciano decided to go live in a kibbutz. For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, the kibbutzim are collective communities in Israel, which were founded on a mixture of Zionism and socialism. Traditionally, a kibbutz was focused on farming, but it is interesting to note that modern examples are sometimes known for focusing on tech as well as other non-farming sectors.
Co-Founded Guess Jeans
Eventually, Marciano moved to the United States with his family. There, he started up Guess Jeans with his brothers. Initially, Marciano served as the person in charge of public relations as well as marketing for the corporation. Later, he rose to the positions of both CEO and President, though he has since stepped down as CEO in preference for being the Executive Chairman of the corporation. Currently, Marciano is serving as the chief creative officer as well.
Now Accused of Sexual Harassment
Marciano is one of the latest figures to be accused of sexual misconduct. In his case, Kate Upton spoke out on social media, expressing a sense of disappointment that he was still serving as the person in charge of creativeness at Guess Jeans even though he has been sexually harassing as well as emotionally harassing women. This prompted two other women to support Upton’s claims, with one stating that she had seen the same when working there and the other stating that she had known someone else who had been affected in that manner when working there. Already, the accusation has had a noticeable impact on Guess Jeans’s performance on the stock market.
