Give this much to Gordon Ramsay, when he lost in an onion cutting competition to a prison cook he was pretty gracious. He even offered the guy a job at one of his restaurants if he wanted it. You could say whatever you want about him not meaning it but honestly when someone like Ramsay offers you a job the first thing out of your mouth should be ‘I’ll take it’. This guy didn’t seem all that enthused and there could be reasons why. It could have been because he was in front of the camera and was a bit shy, it could have been that he didn’t really like cooking but was really good at it, or it could have even been the idea that an ex-con usually doesn’t stand much of a chance of getting a decent job. But if you listen to Ramsay he sounds pretty sincere.
This is a very persistent problem among convicts, a lot of them have committed felonies that will keep them from holding down anything other than labor jobs even though a felony on one’s record is not legally allowed to be used against them in the hiring process. Employers still find loopholes through which to escape when it comes to the decision over whether to hire an ex-con or not. There are those employers that will look past a record unless the felony had something to do with theft or other matters that they cannot condone in their business. Even then some look at the character of the person, not the past they come with. Convicts are typically unable to get jobs that have to do with government or any official setting but there are still plenty of jobs that they can get when they are released. It’s the simple fact that others do tend to look down on felons whenever they disclaim their crimes.
It’s not entirely fair but in some cases it’s for safety reasons more than anything. For instance if someone went to jail for substance abuse that had anything to do with alcohol they wouldn’t be allowed to work as a bartender or in a liquor store. If a person went in with a felony having something to do with guns they wouldn’t be able to own a gun or work in a gun store until five years after their release. Felons lose a great deal when they go in and a lot of them know this, which is they also know that their options are limited once they’re released, if that happens.
But impressing a man like Ramsay is not easy and if one can do so then they should take full advantage of his word and say that of course they will take him up on the offer. For whatever reason this guy chose to remain silent, but I sincerely hope that upon his release he found Ramsay and took the job without question. It would hopefully be a positive start to a new chapter in his life.
