Could Kobe Bryant be adding the title of ‘Oscar winner’ to his impressive list of accomplishments? Nope, probably not if you’re talking about the Oscar actually going to Bryant himself. For his short film, Dear Basketball, it could happen since he’s the writer and is therefore attached to it. But if such a thing happened the Oscar would go for the best short film, of which Bryant is a part but is not the sole creator. It would still be an impressive feat to go from being an all-star basketball legend to being part of an effort that managed to bring in an Oscar. That’s quiet a jump really.
One misconception that a lot of people seem to have about pro athletes is that since a lot of them are no longer in college that they’re fairly ignorant of the other facets of life that have little if anything to do with sports. This is a stereotype that’s been in place for a long time and has tainted the thinking of a lot of people. Athletes are not dummies obviously, they’re intelligent, creative individuals that might not all lean towards the same interests off the court but are extremely diverse in what they enjoy. To be honest I think it’s easy to assume that few people would have thought that Kobe likes to write, much less that he likes to write finely detailed stories that could be put into a screenplay form.
It does seem like it would help to write about something he’s good at, which would allow the project to flow smoothly and create a natural rhythm that could help it to be noticed when it comes time for consideration. You would almost think however that since he’s already been such a star that reaching for another lofty goal such as this wouldn’t be quite as worth it. But honestly once basketball is done what else does he have? The game has been such a big part of his life for so long that it stands to reason that just like any retired athlete he’ll need something to pass the time and keep himself busy once he’s put up his shoes and started on his way towards something else.
Writing is a very interesting choice since it affords a lot of different opportunities, particularly if he tells his own story or a similar story through this chosen medium. I’m sure Kobe has enough stories on and off the court that he could use in order to tell a very compelling story that might interest a lot of fans and even those that don’t know that much about him. The fact that he’s a celebrity is enough to get people to pay attention, but if he tells a gripping story then that will obviously help.
Whether his film is picked for an award or not the completion of it seems impressive enough to warrant some kind of attention. Kobe’s done a lot in his life to this point, this is just one more thing to be proud of.
