At the moment, the Friday the 13th franchise is the prize in a fierce fight over who has what rights to which components of the popular franchise. Unfortunately, there is a real chance that the fight will come to a conclusion with both parties having been handed some of the rights, which could well result in the end of the franchise depending on the exact outcome. As a result, a lot of Friday the 13th fans might be interested in diverting themselves by looking at some of the fun things that have come up for the franchise in the past.
What Is the Friday the 13th Crossover that Never Was?
For example, it is entertaining to note that Freddy vs. Jason was not the first crossover that was proposed for the Friday the 13th franchise. Instead, the director for Friday the 13th Part VI Tom McLoughlin revealed that he had proposed a crossover with Cheech & Chong, which is more than a little bit odd but nonetheless very amusing. After all, for people who are unfamiliar with those names, Cheech & Chong are a comedy duo who were most popular in the 1970s and 80s because of their stoner humor, which resulted in a rather remarkable number of successful movies as well as a slew of side-projects. The producer for the Friday the 13th franchise Frank Mancuso Jr. disliked the idea, but one can’t help but wonder whether the idea primed him to be more receptive towards McLoughlin’s other idea, which was a crossover with The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.
Said movie resulted in a single 2003 movie, which is called Freddy vs. Jason. The resulting movie made more than $114 million at the box office on a $30 million budget, which was enough to make it the single most successful movie in the Friday the 13th franchise and the second most successful movie in The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. As a result, it could be said that it was worth the wait, seeing as how the movie had been hinted at in the ending of Jason Goes to Hell in 1993. No follow-up was ever made for Freddy vs. Jason, but it is interesting to note that there was a comic book series, which saw the two meeting Ash Williams, who horror movie fans should recognize as the protagonist of the Evil Dead franchise.
Speaking of Cheech & Chong, it is interesting to note that it was not the sole Friday the 13th crossover that never was. In fact, one of the earlier drafts for Freddy vs. Jason came to a conclusion with the two in hell, where they wound up meeting Pinhead, the leader of the Cenobites from the Hellraiser franchise, which is expected to see a remake make its way to the movie theaters at some point in 2018. Unfortunately, that particular crossover never came to be, but it is nonetheless fun to think about both of the Friday the 13th crossovers that could have been, particularly in light of the other news involving the franchise at the moment.
