Gareth Evans is a Welsh film director with a decent number of films under his belt and a promising career ahead of him if he manages to score a few key films that he might have on deck. His first big motion picture was in 2006 and he’s been rolling since. His ideas have come together in a very dark but boldly stated manner that speak volumes about his style and what type of film he likes to direct. He’s even had a shot at Justice League Dark but turned it down. Time will tell if that was a wise move but looking at how Justice League has done so far it might have been a smart decision.
Here’s a few things you probably don’t know about him.
5. He’s the person that found Iko Kwais and made him a star.
The Indonesian star of The Raid and The Raid 2 was discovered by Evans and was given a chance to shine. Now that Evans and Kwais have proven what they can do it’s likely that Kwais will continue his career as he’s already been slated for a few upcoming project. In the meantime Evans has one project that’s already been confirmed and another one that still needs approval.
4. He pitched an idea for a Deathstroke solo film and is currently in talks about it.
Deathstroke is a DC character that’s been teased now for a long time when it comes to making a full-length feature film with him in it. There’s not a lot of doubt that the notorious villain could star in his own movie and be great, but the director behind the camera would have to be on point and know exactly what they were doing to bring such a character to life.
3. He has an MA in Scripwriting for Film and Television.
Evans has been through the schooling, he knows what he’s doing, and it’s safe to assume that he could possibly be one of the greats once he gets a few more films under his belt. He graduated in 2003 but didn’t really get noticed until 2006 when he came out with the movie Footsteps. Since then he’s been getting noticed on a fairly regular basis.
2. He favors intricate and brutal fight scenes.
If you’ve ever watched The Raid you’ll see that Kwais, or whoever is fighting, uses very specific movements and are almost always brutal and to the point. If someone gets cut open or bloodied in some way then blood tends to spurt and fly, it won’t just flow. Evans tends to want his scenes to be shockingly brutal, which is what a lot of fans want to see anyway.
1. He used to teach people Welsh over the internet.
This is kind of interesting. Maybe this is part of what he was doing in between graduation and the start of his film career. It might have made him a decent amount of money to live on or get his films rolling. I wonder if he charged international rates.
Gareth Evans might be a name we’re hearing more often in the future.
