Let the fishing expedition begin. Kevin Spacey, who has been one of the many implicated in the current witch hunt, apparently can’t be suspended or fired from House of Card on Netflix. There is it would seem no morals clause in his contract that he would possibly be in violation of, and the incident that brought much of this to light had nothing to do with his time on the popular Netflix program. So in a sense, when it comes to House of Cards he’s as close to his character as he’s ever been, he’s almost untouchable. That undeniable fact truly burns some people and seems to satisfy others.
Not having a morals clause doesn’t give him free reign to do anything he wants, it simply means that if he were to be found guilty of any misconduct no matter what type the show could suspend him or let him go. Since there is no such clause he cannot be released from the show unless he is unable to commit to his role or is otherwise incapacitated. At this moment Spacey is not incapacitated, but has instead voluntarily checked himself in for treatment after being accused of sexual misconduct. Some might say this is a very responsible thing that he’s done and they could be right, but others would contend that it was a very shrewd move to avoid any further trouble.
Honestly though he’s been accused, not charged. Evidence is still being sought after in order to give Netflix some excuse to actually let him go. If they were to simply fire him from the show at this point it would be a very costly venture since they would in effect be breaking the contract. Instead of doing this however Netflix is doing something that is just as ill-advised, they have put out a wide-reaching letter asking anyone that might have been affected by Spacey’s actions, directly or indirectly, to step forward. It’s a very bold and unfortunately not very wise move that shows a level of transparency that could possibly hurt Netflix’s position in this matter since it shows that they are firmly against Spacey and are simply looking for a reason to boot him.
If he is guilty of the crime then he needs to pay for it just like anyone else. The slaps on the wrist and piddly fines that actors and other celebrities are allowed has grown to epidemic levels as has been evidenced by this current issue as it continues to spread. While celebrities might enjoy a significant bump in status and be able to buy and purchase virtually anything, it should never extend to the purchase of favoritism in the eyes of the law. Think upon this at the moment and wonder about it for a few more. If the average person was charged with sexual misconduct, whatever it was, the punishment would be far more immediate than it would be for a celebrity.
The lot of us that are not celebrities are made to follow the law as it was written, not as we would have it. Even if we have the money to pay our fines the imposed sentences that are handed down to average individuals are hard to question and even harder to challenge.
Spacey’s loss of a job should be the least of his concerns if he is actually guilty.
