So here’s the trick. Sony might be bringing back Party of Five with an immigration-inspired twist, but the problem is that they haven’t made their pitch to the network yet. Should they be worried?
Um, yeah, yeah I would think so if you’re not to the point of production yet. Even announcing it seems like a bad idea if you have yet to even make the pitch. I get the lure of throwing out ideas to see if they’ll catch on with people who want to see something like this, but details tend to make a lot of difference between whether you have something or a handful of smoke, or something worse.
In the case of Party of Five there’s a good chance that you might have nothing, or of course have that worse that I just spoke of. Considering the fact that this new cast would be Latino and the fate of their parents is as of yet undisclosed it could really upset a lot of people if such a subject was brought onto the air at this time. Seeing as how the current POTUS is so bent on removing illegals from the country and ICE has been going after people left and right, even those that are legalized citizens, the subject of the show could raise a public outcry that could end up costing Sony more than the price of a lawsuit.
But that’s all conjecture at this point isn’t it? After all, they still haven’t made the pitch. That’s kind of like worrying yourself out of something because you see every bad thing that could happen ten miles down the metaphorical road. In this case however it seems kind of wise to think of the ramifications of such a decision and how it could possibly go if you decided to back the wrong side and present the wrong image. It could possibly be an eye opener if it was done right but the likelihood of that when measured against the track record of Hollywood and all those that think they’ve got a good handle on things isn’t great.
Party of Five had its time and it was good while it lasted, but it might not be the best idea to bring back at this time. In a world where everything seems to offend somebody at one time or another such a show seems like it might be poised to be something that would inevitably upset someone on some fundamental level. There’s a reason it didn’t last and it only had a little to do with the fact that the kids would all eventually grow up and go their own ways.
The show helped to launch at least a couple of careers while it didn’t do much for the others. Bringing in a new cast, all Latino, would not be a bad thing since it would give the show a different perspective and a new type of story line to work from. The only issue is what happened to the parents. That’s kind of a big issue at this moment.
