Dragon Con 2017: The Biggest Cosplay Party of the Year

I’ll be honest and admit that at one point and time I never thought much of cosplay. I still don’t know if I would ever get into it myself but it is unique and just flat out awesome to look at how invested people get into it. Within the last decade or so cosplay has really come out as its own culture and taken over in certain venues. Having attended my first and only Wizard-Con not long ago I can say that it was a very interesting and enlightening experience. Going to Dragon-Con 2017 though would have been an epic stage for the ages.

There’s great cosplay, then there’s good cosplay, and then there’re those you look at like “what were you thinking?”. You can’t fault the ones that give only minimal effort though, at least they’re trying. But those that spend the money and the time to get their costumes right are simply impressive on a scale that can just barely be measured. So many people work as hard as they can to get the look of their favorite superheroes, villains, or other characters down right that in the end they look like movie-quality costumes.

Even more impressive and much more unique are those that take certain elements from their favorites and blend them together or come up with an entirely new design. The imagination and ingenuity used in these costumes is amazing and to think of how many hours these people spend on them kind of boggles the mind.

Dragon-Con looks like it’s a gigantic party and it looks like loads of fun packed into one area. I can just imagine that this place is continually packed for the event and that anywhere you turn you’re bound to be impressed and even shocked into silent awe by what you see. Chances are good that you’d even see a few workshops on how to make these astounding cosplay outfits and create your own designs since cosplay has become such a huge subculture.

Held in Atlanta, GA, this event is even bigger than the noted SDCC, which to many is considered the mecca of cosplay and the place to be when determining what’s coming out, what’s new, and what there is to see in the world of fiction. Dragon-Con looks just like that, just with, MORE. I get the feeling you could spend two to three days at this place and still not see everything. That might be an exaggeration but it really looks that big. Personally I’m not a fan of big crowds but viewing this at at distance would be awesome.

The chance to go and just sit off in a corner somewhere, I think I’d have panic attack if I sat in the middle of it, would be an experience that would be something to cross of the old bucket list. It’s easy to admit that cosplay is extremely impressive when viewed up close or from a respectful distance. It’s unlike any other experience around and affords you a chance to see what other people are passionate about and what is important to them.
