Five Things You Didn’t Know about Gavin O’Connor

Primarily, Gavin O’Connor is known for being an American movie director. However, it should be said that he has worked on a wide range of media projects as not just as director but also as a producer, a screenwriter, and on two occasions, an actor. Currently, O’Connor is in the news because it is reported that he will be directing Suicide Squad 2, which is set in the same universe as Wonder Woman as well as the upcoming Justice League.

Here are five things that you may or may not have known about Gavin O’Connor:

Know His Goal From the Start

Even as a child, O’Connor knew that he wanted to become a movie director. In fact, he was so focused on becoming movie director that he has stated that it is all that he has ever wanted to do, which is rather remarkable to say the least. Regardless, it is clear that O’Connor has managed to fulfill his childhood dream, seeing as how he has been directing movies since the 1990s.

Got His Start on The Bet

O’Connor got his start on a short movie called The Bet. Like its name suggests, The Bet was about a pair of brothers running a business inherited from the father, one of whom has lost control over his gambling habits. Regardless, the short movie was not the directorial debut of O’Connor but rather Ted Demme, who was a director as well as a producer for MTV as well as a wide range of other media projects. Instead, O’Connor served as an executive producer as well as a screenwriter, which are roles in which he has worked on a regular basis since that time.

Got His Directorial Debut with Comfortably Numb

In 1995, O’Connor got his own directorial debut with a feature film called Comfortably Numb, which was about a prosecutor in New York City struggling with moral dilemmas. Besides being the director, O’Connor was also a producer as well as one of the two screenwriters, with the other being Kirby Hayde. While Comfortably Numb was not particularly notable, it was screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

Made Miracle

One of O’Connor’s best-known movies is Miracle, which came out in 2004. Given that it was a sports docudrama, it should come as no surprise to hockey fans to learn that Miracle was about the Miracle on Ice, which was when a US Olympic team of amateurs beat a Russian Olympic team of professionals in the medal round. Said occurrence was even more notable because the Russians had won the gold medal in six out of the seven previous Olympics, which explains a lot about why it was called a miracle.

Made Warrior

In 2011, O’Connor made another sports movie in the form of Warrior, which was about a pair of estranged brothers who come to term with one another through their participation in a mixed martial arts tournament. The movie received a lot of critical acclaim, as shown by the fact that Nick Nolte actually received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for playing the brothers’ alcoholic father. Unfortunately, the movie was not a commercial success by any measurement.
