Some of the Most Controversial Movie Endings of All-Time

There’s nothing more sure to kill a great movie than a lousy and/or  controversial ending that fans did not see coming and could not get behind. Whether the director ran out of gas at the end or just didn’t figure on how the ending would be received by viewers and fans alike it comes down to the fact that some endings left a lot to be desired. You don’t spend good money on a movie ticket to go enjoy three quarters of a movie after all, you want to be entertained the whole way through.

Here are several movies who’s endings were just too much to be believed.

Monty Python’s The Life of Bryan

Any movie that is about Jesus Christ is bound to be scrutinized pretty harshly considering that Christianity is one of the largest religions in the world. Screw up once they might shrug and tell you to keep going. Screw up again and the rumors and whispers might start up. Screw up without fixing anything and you might just crucified for it, metaphorically obviously.

Titanic

James Cameron had it in for Jack, that’s all it was. That door was plenty big enough and it was proven because the Mythbusters used the same setup and had a smaller door and it still worked. So yeah, Cameron had a bias against Jack the entire time because his death was already in the script. It was more poetic that way or some junk.

Blade Runner

To this day no one really agrees on the argument of whether Deckard was a replicant or not. You could argue that the police force only kept him on thinking that using a replicant to find other replicants was a wise move, or you could argue that he wasn’t a replicant and that his dreams were something other than the program. You know, dreams can be influenced by outside factors after all.

The Mist

How many people shook their head at this ending? It was so far off from what the book was that it actually made some people angry just because of the content. Instead of driving off into the unknown without much hope the guy kills everyone in the car and waits for sudden death just to realize that the army has saved the day. Oy.

Watchmen

I can understand not putting a giant squid in this movie, it’d already reached it’s ridiculous quotient at that point and didn’t need any further add-ons. Plus, a villain blaming it on a hero was a decent twist.

The Dark Knight Rises

Batman gets a happy ending? Get out of here. With the kind of torture that guy puts himself through I thought just getting to sleep every now and again would be a vacation.

The Grey

Cutting to black right before the most epic showdown feels like kind of a cheat, like the director just didn’t have enough gas left in the tank. But of course he’s going to claim that he’d reached the limit of what was needed.

Snowpiercer

Two kids are going to repopulate the entire planet? Yeah, maybe, if they can outrun a hungry polar bear while running through the snow. Ever notice how the human race is doomed in the future?

Passengers

I can see the controversy throughout the movie, but the ending seems pretty upbeat to be honest. It might be a little problematic having a giant tree growing in the middle of your ship but it still seems a lot better than finding two dried out dead folks somewhere in the ship.

Some directors just love to leave people hanging it seems.
