Our Favorite Pairings of Police Partners in Movies

Pairing up police officers in the movies works great sometimes, and then at other times it kind of falls flat and kills the movie.  The chemistry between the two has to be just right or nothing of significance is going to happen, no matter how great the script or the dialogue is. If the chemistry isn’t right in a buddy movie then it’s time to hang things up at the end of filming. But if you have the right pair then there’s a good chance that you’ll have Hollywood gold on your hands for at least one film. Some cop buddy films have been able to stand the test of time and are still among some of the favorite movies that many fans will gladly watch again and again.

Out of the many, here are just a few.

5. Red Heat

One of the basic parts to the buddy cop movie formula is that the two cops have to be as opposite as they can possibly be. Can you think of a pair that’s more opposite than Belushi and Schwarzenegger? One is built like a brick outhouse and the other is, well, his squishy and has a sarcastic attitude. Yeah, the opposition between these two couldn’t get any more real.

4. Tango and Cash

Sometimes it’s just attitude that separates the two like in this movie. Tango and Cash are about as opposite as two personalities can be. One is strictly by the book and won’t go against procedure unless there’s no other choice, while the other has to be reminded that there is such a thing as procedure. So of course they’re perfect for each other, they’re like an old married couple.

3. The Heat

Yep, women can get in on this act too. But strangely enough the attitudes of this pair are quite the opposite when off screen as they’ve revealed. When they’re not onscreen McCarthy is the more straight-laced of the pair and Bullock has the foulest mouth between them. You wouldn’t be able to tell by watching their performance though, both ladies are that good at what they do.

2. Bad Boys

You know a movie was a hit when they come back for the sequel, but with rumors that Bad Boys 3 is still a go even though part 2 was kind of a no-go you have to wonder what they’re going to try to do to get back to square one. Martin Lawrence and Will Smith aren’t getting any younger, so the third installment might have to be the last.

1. Lethal Weapon

Ah  yes, crazy meets planned retirement. Remember that Murtaugh was planning on retiring when he met Riggs, and then things got all topsy-turvy and he changed his mind until he became a grandfather by the fourth movie. By then it was probably time to call it quits. After all he and Riggs had taken out so many of the bad guys that Murtaugh’s son in law should have been able to just sit at his desk and wait for something to happen.

The buddy cop films are still great, but it’s time that someone did something different.
