We all know by now that come Saturday there’s going to be a war in the ring come main event time. The McGregor vs. Mayweather fight has been heating up with more and more hype the longer it’s been allowed to build, and a lot of people are going to be expecting a match that is nothing short of epic come next Saturday. The only problem is that, like any fight night, there are more matches to be considered.
How would it feel being the guys on the preliminary and main card when no one even knows you’re fighting except those close to you and the fans that actually care more about the sport than the names that are in it? It’d be pretty humiliating actually to be quite honest. Mayweather vs. McGregor has been getting so much publicity and hype that people have almost forgotten that there’s more than one fight on that night. At this point you’d almost expect a huge portion of the crowd to not even show up until the main event, which would be even worse.
Granted these fighters are going out there to fight for titles and wins but it still has to sting that their fights are being considered lesser in any regard because of the main event. That’s like saying that their fights are just filler and don’t matter as much. They’re support, nothing more. That sounds uniquely insulting and very disturbing to say the least.
Here’s the card as it stands now:
Preliminary card
- Super Lightweight-Heraldez vs. Borrego
- Super Middleweight-Newman II vs. Hernandez
- Super Middleweight-Marshall vs. LeBlanc
- Welterweight-Ugas vs. Dulorme
Main card
- NABF Cruiserweight Title-Tabiti vs. Cunningham
- WBA World Light Heavyweight Title-Cleverly vs. Jack
- IBF World Super Featherweight Title-Davis vs. Fonseca
- Super Welterweight-Mayweather Jr. vs. McGregor
See? There are seven other fights that night that AREN’T bout Mayweather or McGregor. Admittedly Mayweather was a mentor to Davis, but this night they’ll have nothing to do with each other as they each focus on their own battle. The level of disrespect between Mayweather and McGregor is so high that you almost expect to see spark flying when they both come to the ring.
There’s going to be a reckoning this next Saturday, but before it happens it’s up to the fourteen young men that are going to be in the ring slugging it out for dominance to make certain that people knew they were there that night. That’s about all that can be done to still even a fraction of the hype that has been built leading up to the main match, and it’s going to be all on the other boxers to make it happen.
You can argue that it’s not fair that they have to be made to work so much harder to get noticed, but keep in mind that even Mayweather and McGregor had to start somewhere. At one point and time they were just as hungry as those younger men and would have done anything to gain the fame they desired.
