Strikeouts and homers are what make baseball interesting right? Well, there’s a lot of other things but these two parts of the game do their fair share in granting the fans a certain level of excitement. The anticipation of the pitch and the expectation of what’s to come are all part of the moment leading up to glory for one team and defeat for the other. Strikeouts are exciting enough when the game is on the line but otherwise they can be a step in the right direction. They can even be amusing when it comes to movies.
Here are some of the best strikeouts ever recorded in films.
5. For the Love of the Game
Billy is all over the map as the pain in his hand and shoulder continue to bother him. Yet somehow for most of the game he’s been pitching one strikeout after another without even realizing it. Only when he looks up in the eight inning does he realize just what he’s been doing. And then everything almost goes south as he takes one batter to 3-0 before finally tightening it up and striking him out.
4. Trouble With The Curve
It might not be in a game but there’s enough strikes in this clip to retire a side for the inning. Gentry, a first round rated pick for the Braves, is an awesome hitter when it’s laid in right where he wants it to be. But when a pitcher comes along that can challenge him, like the unknown Sanchez, he suddenly becomes just another big talker without much depth.
3. The Sandlot
You had to know this one would make it on the list. Ham Porter is the king of the psych-outs when it comes to minding home plate. The Sandlot kids aren’t playing so much to win as they are for pride. They already know how to win, but the love of the game makes it that much easier to school the guys that only think they’re that great. Passion coupled with skill tends to trump just plain old skill a lot of times.
2. The Benchwarmers
Never have I seen anyone so amused or proud of a foul tip. Richie and Clarke are without a doubt two of the worst players to ever hold a bat, and yet by the end of the film they’ve actually learned how to hit, how to run, yes, run, and how to win a baseball game. It took a lot of strikeouts along the way and a few stunned squirrels, but they did learn.
1b. Major League 2
And now we come to the titans, the two men that know each other so well and were bound to show up against each other for an ultimate face off. Vaughn vs. Parkman, the epic clash of pitcher versus catcher. Parkman is obviously a powerhouse and Vaughn was coming off a slump that might have kept him benched if not for the faith of his coach. Wild Thing was in the house, and it was time for a little payback.
1A – Major League – Final Strike Out
I mean come on. Nothing compares to the Wild Thing.
Strikeouts are a batter’s worst nightmare and a pitcher’s fondest dream.
