If you’ve watched the movie then it’s easy to assume that you might have felt a certain way about Yondu getting the ax. Despite his change of heart when it came to Quill he was still seen as a rather irritating individual that jumped the line between good and bad quite often depending on his needs. But when it came to Peter he was more or less a good person.
This is a bit different from the Guardians in the original comic book, of whom Yondu was a part, but considering that directors don’t feel the need to stick to source material any more it’s not too surprising. If they were going to go by the source material then not a single Guardian on the team would be present at the moment if the Guardian’s are just forming up throughout these two movies. But like I said, almost nothing goes by source material any more, and anyway, the current Guardians are what’s being accepted as canon as of now so, let’s move on.
The ending was a bit sad really but at least fitting. This one in the cartoon version seems like it’d be a bit, well, cheesy. Yondu sacrificing himself was kind of anticlimactic considering that Peter and his father had just ended an epic fight that resulted in the other Guardians being able to find a way to kill Ego. Still it was a noble thing to do considering all he’d done to that point and it showed that Yondu was a good person way down.
The cartoon ending is perhaps the happier, more satisfying version for some but in reality it’s kind of selfish. Keeping Yondu alive doesn’t make much sense because in a way it’s kind of like saying goodbye to the one last link that remained of the original Guardians. To keep him around still would have meant just dragging out the story line for all it’s worth and there’s too many movies that do that now anyway.
Plus, and I know it’s for comic effect, having them sitting around a table discussing what they did with Superman and Batman in a parody of the scene in the Avengers when the group is enjoying a bite to eat at the end is kind of, well, lame. Guardian’s of the Galaxy ended the way it should have, and in all honesty since there’s going to be another one there’s no real reason for fans to get all weepy and teary-eyed over Yondu since in the Marvel universe people don’t tend to stay dead for very long. They either come back as their current incarnation or are somehow made to reappear as a different person.
Really, think about how many different characters have “died” and come back. Yondu could be just another name on that ever-lengthening list. It wouldn’t come as any surprise really if he was back in the third movie looking none the worse for wear.
So to recap the movie ended just as it should have.
