Our expectations couldn’t possibly have gotten any lower when it comes to the most recent iteration of [easyazon_link identifier=”B01H2UG4WS” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Sharknado[/easyazon_link] known as “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming” since they were zero. On the other hand, we had to have a look just to see if each one could possibly get even more ridiculous than the previous Sharknado. It was way back in 2013 when the first Sharknado hit the mainstream movie screen. Clearly, it was a joke, right? Well, almost. Ridiculous as it may have seemed, it became an overnight cult classic in many circles.
The biggest success in the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00G0IV0OQ” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Sharknado franchise[/easyazon_link] was “Sharknado 2: The Second One” (2014), which garnered 3.8 million viewers. It was followed by “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!” (2015), and then “Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens” (2016). Each one achieved a 2.8 million viewership. And, compared to the mere 1.4 million viewers that the first Sharknado had, it was truly amazing that tweets were actually pouring in at the incredible rate of 5,000 a minute. Clearly, it was an instant hit.
Now, Sharknado 5 has aired on the small screen. The night that it aired, #Sharknado5 was trending worldwide, so there’s quite definitely a Sharknado 5 fan base for this crazy film featuring people fighting off sharks. Of course, Ian Ziering is back as the star of the film playing Fin Shepard, who is a shark hunter. In this one, he has teamed up with his spouse, April, played by Tara Reid, as well as another shark fighter named Nova Clarke, played by Cassie Scerbo.
Sharknado 5 is jam-packed with celeb cameos. For starters, what is probably the most unusual casting choice ever is Fabio as the pope. You remember Fabio, don’t you? His claim to fame was being pictured on the covers of cheesy pulp romance novels. Some other celeb cameos were Clay Aiken playing a British scientist. He gives a tracking helmet to Fin’s son and, later in the film, that helmet becomes a crucial plot detail.
Another celeb appearance is made by the always funny Chris Kattan playing a British prime minister whose leg is bitten off by a shark. And, then there’s “Dance Mom” star Abby Lee Miller, who gets her head bitten off. Kathie Lee Gifford, Hoda Kotb, and Al Roker also make an appearance in Sharknado 5 to present the breaking news that the sharknados had come back to the U.S. And one of the silliest appearances is Bret Michaels playing guitar while basically riding on the front end of a bus. Well, that’s only until he’s eaten by a shark just like everybody else. And, last but not least [easyazon_link identifier=”B00005NWMI” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Olivia Newton-John[/easyazon_link] appears along with her very hot daughter, Chloe Lattanzi, playing a couple of scientists.
So, the premise and the underlying story are both ridiculous. And, in spite of a few cameos, the film has absolutely no star power, that’s for sure. But still, each one has become a cult classic and they’re definitely unforgettable even if it’s only for their utter ridiculousness. In the end, everybody dies except for Fin and his son, who is aged considerably by the magic of cinema and time machines and is then played by [easyazon_link identifier=”B005EGKBHM” locale=”US” tag=”tvovermind00a-20″]Dolph Lundgren[/easyazon_link]. Huh? The final tag is, and no surprise here, a card that says “to be continued”. So, look out world, Sharknado 6 is coming down the pike real soon.
