“Great British Bake Off” Trailer is Stop Motion Mania

The show “Great British Bake Off” is a transplant from one channel to another. They’re now facing some uncertain times as three fourths of their on air talent have also gone away. They’ve taken on the task of promoting the show in a way that lets fans know that the series will still feature the same appeal factors that hooked them in the beginning. They are trying to breathe new life into the series. The result of the changes has created a situation where stop motion mania is taking over.

What the producers came up with

It could be that the lack of props for the relaxed tent environment was a little too comfortable. They came up with a plan that has a little more eye appeal. The presentation was definitely lacking something and it was left to them to figure out what would fit the bill. They went to the far left with the images of food puking up food. If the goal is to make the show “easy to watch” you’d better not plan on eating lunch while you’re doing it. It’s got to be an attempt at humor yes? Well, maybe someone saw the humor in the configurations, but it’s a bit on the obscure side. If you’ve watched the video that is promoting the new ads then you’re probably joining the masses and scratching your head. It doesn’t exactly tell us what we can expect from the show. The new ads do allude to something very different though.

Stop motion as an art form?

The new trailer for the show opens with a pile of ingredients heaving up a face. Next, it moves to a blend of batter ingredients that emit smiley faces before they are mixed into nothingness. Popovers rise and the cheese starts to bubble. Breads and pastries are baking in the oven and as they brown, the goods develop smiley faces that start singing. The cookies burst into a chorus and the bread is sliced up quickly and gradually disappears. The effects are kinda cool, but they’re also a little on the creepy side. Animated food isn’t exactly appetizing. The point is, that everything is brought to life and it becomes humanized. And just what is with all the singing? These happy little cookies, cakes and other confections aren’t going to be smiling and celebrating when they are cut into pieces and slowly eaten are they?

Will the new ads work to up viewership?

The trailer is certainly a different approach. If breathing life into the advertisement was the goal, then the producers have taken this directive quite literally. On one hand, the animation does indicate living, breathing creations and they are all quite happy to boot. This could be seen as a positive by an eternal optimist. On the other hand, those of us who are neither optimistic nor particularly negative are slightly taken aback and a little confused as to the intentions of the ads. We’re not sure of the intended point and it’s a little confusing because while the stop motion is a cool technique, it isn’t what anybody expected to see from “Great British Bake Off.”
