Oh boy, the Russo Brothers have joined forces with Noah Hawley on a new project that is bound to garner fan support. The name of the upcoming series is “The Mastermind.” You are probably familiar with some of the work that the Russo brothers have done, including Captain America: Civil War. FX came to an agreement with the two brothers to begin the development of a new crime drama series that will be focused on characters and storylines from an Atavist Magazine investigative series.
If having the Russo brothers as the primary developers of the series was exciting enough for true television fans, FX also brought in Noah Hawley as the executive producer of the series. You are probably familiar with the work of Noah Hawley – with such successful projects as Fargo and Legion. It is likely that the Russo brother will also function as executive producers of the show, and they may even direct, but the latter function has not been decided for certain as of yet.
This has been a slow but progressive process. It begins back in 2016 when companies owned by the Russos, Skybound Entertainment and Getaway Productions made a preemptive move by acquiring the rights to The Mastermind from Atavist Magazine. What this did is ensure that no other producers or networks would come in and beat them to the punch. At the time they acquired the rights they had not yet acquired a network deal to produce the show; however, over the next several months they were able to hammer out the details and come to terms with FX.
What you can expect from this series is high energy and superb writing and production. The Russo brothers have proven that they have the remarkable capacity to bring stories and concepts to life, which is evidenced by the work they did on Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. The two have already been pegged to handle to upcoming Avenger movies.
This series is somewhat momentous due to the fact that it brings the Russos back to FX which is where the two got their first big television break, which they took on the responsibility of direct the comedy series, Lucky, which became a cult classic for the network. After directing Lucky, the brothers would go on to direct Arrested Development for Fox, an endeavor that would end up earning them an Emmy Award.
As far as the series itself, the storyline follows the life of programmer turned drug kingpin Paul Le Roux throughout a number of adventures, at some point during the first season, Le Roux will turn informant for the DEA and the full story of his life will be illuminated. The Mastermind series has had a great deal of success as a podcast and with the use of true crime stories as inspiration, creating a massively huge audience, which could likely be parlayed into a sizeable television audience. The Russos and Noah Hawley are geniuses when it comes to taking known content and ideas and making them better and bringing them to life, so those who already fans of the show will love the adaptation and the show is destined to attract new fans along the way.
