Poultry usually only has one place in a film and that’s on the plate right before it gets devoured. In some films though it plays a different role largely because let’s face it, chickens can be very funny. Even if the chicken wasn’t the star of the film, it played a noticeable role that people tend to remember. In some films it was actually the most notable role of all.
Here’s just a few films where chickens were a driving part of the scene and were remembered as a big part of the movie.
Rocky II
Rocky doesn’t look to enthused about this old school training exercise, but when that chicken gets to going he finds it’s harder to keep up than he thought. Who would’ve thought that a chicken could outfox a grown man with such ease? It’s not even catching up to the dang thing, it’s grabbing hold of it when you do. Ever try to hold onto a panicked chicken? If the wings don’t batter you to death then the beak and the claws might give you a nasty little surprise.
Hot Shots Part Deux
When in doubt, grab a chicken. Yeah, it sounded silly to me too, but any parody of Rambo is bound to have a few gimmicks that just don’t make sense. It made for a good laugh though when the chicken in question went sailing towards the bad guy to bury itself beak first in his chest. And to make matters worse, the chicken just had to lay an egg immediately after the kill. Goofy yes, ridiculous yes, but funny, yeah, definitely.
The Help
Don’t go telling Minnie what she needs to do, especially when it comes to chicken. Her sass and the need to always let people know what she’s thinking is sometimes bound to get her into trouble, but it’s what keeps the character so likable and endearing. But please, oh please don’t tell Minnie to burn chicken, that’s just not right. Of course she does it at least once in the film, but with good reason at least.
Overboard
There aren’t a lot of guys that wouldn’t want some payback on a woman that refused to pay them for a job well done, but this seems to be stretching it. Plus, would you really want anyone that’s never cooked a day in their lives to be handling and preparing your food? At the very least they didn’t get food poisoning, but then it’s hard to be poisoned when you can barely chew your meal. You killed a chicken?
Chicken Run
So yes, a film about chickens as the stars finally. There have been a few in fact but this has been one of the most popular since its release. The film centers around a bunch of chickens that are eager to escape their lot in life and are planning to do so with the help of a cocky, fast-talking rooster that is going to teach them how to fly. When it’s discovered that chickens are not built to fly however the plan changes a little and obviously it becomes a mad dash to the finish to make sure they’re not all turned into chicken pot pies.
So chickens aren’t always the biggest stars, but they do add some hilarity to a film. Even when they’re just bit pieces for comedy you tend to remember them.
