Casting the Perfect MacGyver Feature Film

Casting the Perfect MacGyver Feature Film

Back in the mid-1980’s if you were watching TV you no doubt manages to chance upon a show that featured a main character that did not conform to the popular style of most heroes. MacGyver was a secret agent that disdained the use of guns and implemented a style of offense and defensive tactics that involved using spare parts and existing materials to hatch his most ingenious plans. The most impressive thing about MacGyver’s many different scientific and useful ventures is that they were vetted by actual scientists and said to be feasible at least, though very dangerous and volatile in most cases.

Plot

MacGyver’s origin story has rarely if ever been fully explained, so it might behoove the studio that creates such a film to explain how MacGyver came to be who he was. MacGyver can make his way through childhood, then adolescence, and then early adulthood in a fairly quick succession of scenes. This can show how and why he came to be the secret agent that many people fell in love with. It can also show the reasoning behind his disdain for conventional weaponry and how he has trained his mind to work so efficiently that anything can become a weapon or a defensive mechanism. The relationship between himself and Murdoc can be better explained as he and the assassin seek to oppose one another in a nationwide calamity. Murdoc is of course opposed to MacGyver’s attempts to stop this calamity as his employers are the ones that seek to cause the aforementioned trouble.

Cast

Director – John Woo

John Woo is known for action, and putting him in the directors seat for this high-octane film would only make sense as he can bring to life the action and excitement that MacGyver is well-known for. With such films as Face/Off, The Replacement Killers, and Windtalkers under his belt, he has what it takes to bring this movie to life.

MacGyver – Charlie Hunnam

Hunnam is the type of actor that excelled in TV but is still trying to make his push into the mainstream and earn his Hollywood credits. While Pacific Rim wasn’t outright horrible, his latest rendition of King Arthur has met with fairly negative reviews. If he could pull off the look and feel of this icon he would be able to finally claim a success.

Peter Thornton – Bruce Willis

Willis has played mysterious characters before, so this would a perfect fit. From the Expendables to a short part in GI Joe: Retaliation, he plays the part of the veteran very well.

Jack Dalton – Bryan Cranston

The best friend to MacGyver, Dalton is more of a support to the main character, which Cranston is capable of doing. Despite his meteoric rise to stardom, he is still able to offer his services as a backup.

Nikki Carpenter – Kate Mckinnon

Most people would say that Mckinnon is a funny woman and little else. But she has acting chops and can prove it. Giving her a chance for this role would be a wise move as she can pull off serious as well as humorous.

Murdoc – Rufus Sewell

Every good guy has to have a bad guy that is nearly his match in everything. Murdoc is the perfect foil for MacGyver as they are about as opposite as can get. Fortunately however Murdoc does eventually display redeeming qualities, which could liven up the overall plot considerably.

Conclusion

Despite the fact that this list is just a wish in the wind, it is still fun to think about what might happen with these characters. Taking into account the lack of success that the revamped TV show brought, it might be time to kick off the legend of MacGyver with a little more style and a lot more bang.
