Move over DC, Marvel is taking over television in a big way. Its conquest of Netflix will be complete when The Defenders hits the streaming service later this summer. And in addition to Agents of SHIELD, we’re set to get Cloak and Dagger, The Gifted and now an animated Deadpool series beamed directly into our living rooms.
With superheroes blowing up the big screen, it only makes sense that studio heads would want to wring every dollar out of the giant-sized franchises while they still can. Fox is especially eager to capitalize on its superhero holdings, since it only has the X-Men and Fantastic Four rights to work with.
The new series is set to debut in 2018, right around the time when Deadpool 2 is hitting theaters. The series is set to be written by brothers Donald and Stephen Glover, who have had success at both television and comedy in the past. Between the two of them, they have had a notable hand in the FX dramedy Atlanta, 30 Rock and Community, in addition to a handful of standup specials. Glover has additionally done voice work on the exceptional Ultimate Spider-Man series as the half-Black, half-Latino Spider-Man Miles Morales.
The series is currently set to premiere on FXX and is scheduled for a short, ten-episode season. This could easily expand, however, if the series is a hit.
Executive Vice President of Marvel Television was excited about the prospect of bringing Deadpool to the small screen, stating
“How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX: the perfect fit for the Merc with a Mouth! We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started wth Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
Both this statement and FXX’s propensity for adult-skewed programming suggest that this will not be a “kiddy version” of Deadpool, but a series packed with all of the violence, swearing and crass humor that fans have come to expect from the fourth wall-shattering anti-hero. While this won’t be Deadpool’s first TV appearance, it will be the first where he’d be allowed to cut loose like this.
Although there is not official word as of yet as to whether Donald Glover will be voicing Deadpool himself, it seems as likely a bet as any at this point. He’s a talented voice actor whose comic delivery is second to none. The fact that he’s be working on the series as a writer, producer and show-runner would make him the most qualified man in the room to know what, if anything, is going on in Deadpool’s head.
