I’m an old school guy and love the experience of going to the theater, getting a giant tub of popcorn, and watching a movie on the big screen with surround sound. But even I can admit that it’s getting to the point of absurdity to go to the movies. The Blu-Ray for Logan is coming out on May 23rd. That’s in 3 weeks folks. Is it me or does it feel like this movie’s just been released? With the technology we now have at home, if you have a big enough screen and a nice enough sound system, you could very well experience Logan in nearly the same manner as the movie theater. Only at home you can pause the movie, go to the bathroom, do whatever you want, and not have to worry about annoying chatty people sitting near you.
So what’s the incentive to go to the theater when Blu-Ray DVDs get released literally within a month of a movie being in theaters? Not to mention cable. I’ll bet you that Logan is available to get on cable within weeks and that it’ll be on a channel like HBO by July. So again, why even go to the movies?
Like I said, I do love the experience of the theater but I will say this. Movie theaters are going to have to come up with something much much better if they’re going to stay in business. Why waste 40-50 bucks (per person if you included ticket, popcorn, and drink) on going to the theater? Unless going to the movies can become as interesting as going to a sporting event, theatrical production, or a theme park, I don’t think theaters have a remote chance at surviving.
