The closest thing we have had to a biopic on Michael Jackson was when VH1 released their mini-series The Jacksons: An American Dream which I felt was pretty decent. We’ve also had a few documentaries on Michael Jackson. But there’s never been a feature film yet. I think a lot of people are curious about this. Considering there’s a new film about Jackson’s monkey (this is true) you’d think that something might be in the works about Jackson himself.
Michael Jackson had, at the least, an interesting life and was the greatest pop star ever. Usually when someone of that caliber dies the studios can’t wait to make a biopic, especially if it’s not too long ago so they can cash in on the recent media hype. Maybe it’s too hard to get right? Who would they get to play him since he looked so weird after all his operations? Also how do you touch the subject of the rape allegations and his trials etc.?
I think this are the main challenges the movie would face. But no matter which way you cut it, he was a fascinating human being and it could potentially be an amazing film. Casting might be an issue as well as finding a suitable director. Plus I can only imagine how difficult it would be to secure the rights to a film (which might be the biggest challenge of all). On the one hand I think doing this film could be a colossal mistake. On the other, get a director in there like a David Fincher, an amazing screenwriter, and someone (I don’t know who) to get Michael Jackson done “right” and you could have a legendary film.
