No Matter What Happens, Girls Was Amazing This Season

The series finale of Girls is tonight and I’m here to say that no matter what happens, it’s been an amazing final season.  I might argue this is the best season of the entire show.  While seasons 1 and 2 brought a novelty to it that most shows do, this season really brought the evolution of each character together in ways that were incredibly realistic and didn’t let audiences down.  While the “newness” of the show carried its first couple of seasons, that was almost the “easy” part.  And by no means am I saying the show wasn’t quality work.  It 100% was but I think even Lena Dunham herself would agree that the show did things we hadn’t seen on television before and that alone made audiences want to tune in.  The further along the show went, the more difficult it got.

The challenge of any show is keeping the audience interested once a novelty wears off.   What was the show to do once we already knew Hannah would be naked at some point?  What was the show to do once we knew that some kind of crazy sexual act or drug and alcohol induced night would eventually happen?  The show needed to write.  The show needed to develop the characters.  The show needed to evolve.   I personally believe seasons 3 and 4 are where you started to see “burnout.”  Those novelties wore off and the show almost felt as if it were at a standstill.   But then all of a sudden this Jessa and Adam situation happened and boom, the show took on new life.

Marni’s life was always annoying but even hers evolved as well.  Ray has always been a constant.  The use of Elijah as practically a star of the show was a great move simply because Andrew Rannells is amazing and Elijah and Hannah are incredible in every scene they’re in together.

But as far as Season 6 goes, we see every character move on.  And that’s exactly what I expect out of tonight.  We’re going to find out exactly how each of them moves on.  I think in last week’s episode that may have been the last time you see all four together.  I kind of hope that this is the case.  While seeing them together again would be fun, I think a more realistic ending to the series would see them apart.

It’s truly tough to say what’s going to happen here but hopefully Hannah finds peace upstate.   Marni better get her act together and get a “real” job and settle down with a dude in finance.  I hope Jessa DOES try to help people.   I don’t care what happens to Shosh.   Ray needs to be a writer.   Elijah will make it in Hollywood.  And frankly I just need to see Laird one more time.

Like I said though, no matter what happens, this season has been fantastic.
