If you don’t think there’s a lot riding on Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman, you’d be mistaken. This is the opportunity for the DCEU to mark it’s rise in cinema. With Batman vs. Superman and Suicide Squad not getting the reviews the studios were hoping for, a lighter, more “humorous” movie might be exactly what audiences are looking for. And that’s what we’re expected to see in the new DC Comics movie. Given the “bad taste in our mouths” status of the solo Batman movie, Wonder Woman provides a chance for the DCEU to gain a little bit of ground on the MCU. And now that Joss Whedon has signed on to direct a Batgirl film, things seem to be looking up for the DCEU.
Speaking of looking up, early reports are suggesting that Wonder Woman could have a massive opening when it’s released in June. According to CBM, Wonder Woman is now being forecasted to have an opening weekend of around $83 million, which is a very similar amount to Logan and Doctor Strange. The Gal Gadot-led film is also predicted to finish with an overall domestic total of $225 million.
Obviously a ton can happen between now and then but so far the marketing has been excellent. As long as they keep releasing images like the one above, things should be just fine.
