As predicted, Supergirl was setting the show up for the calm before the storm. While the characters have found stability within their relationships, CADMUS is on the rise and hunting down all aliens, which is causing all types of new turmoil for everyone. It’s been nice to watch Supergirl finally take a darker step forward with it’s conflict and put the heroes at a disadvantage where they will really be put to the test.
What’s interesting is the show is really circling around the idea of integrating aliens into culture and how that will play out. This is the deepest the show has gotten into the topic and it’s pretty harsh. On one hand, Supergirl takes a look at the disconnection still clearly present between humans and aliens. It’s nice that the show is beginning to incorporate the journalism side of Kara’s character and how important it is for her to represent aliens through this outlet. Kara and Snapper have always had a fun relationship, but the representation of aliens in the media is probably the most important thing Kara has ever wanted to see published.
This aspect of Kara’s character really shines through with the return of Jeremiah and how that is impacting her and Alex. While Kara is unwilling to fully let the return of her father sway her feelings on the current situations happening, it’s beginning to impact Alex’s decision making. While Alex is operating off of a decent amount of emotion, her intentions remain good and her belief strong. Her belief in her father’s true nature is admirable and it also is just nice to see Alex operating rogue. Her character has always been a great soldier but never fully gone off on her own or challenged J’onn’s orders.
“Exodus” really does a lot for Alex as a character, because she is able to prove (at least to viewers) that Jeremiah is still good and not just a CADMUS drone. It has also shown a lot of strength between her and Maggie and the support she has shown Alex in the toughest time of her life, when she has faced so many tough decisions. Supergirl has really developed it’s characters well though, and for how much the show revolves around a family aspect, it’s escalating things really well. Last night’s episode was an emotional one that pushes everyone to an emotional brink. Alex wants to save her father, Kara needs to save Alex, and even Winn struggles with the possibility of losing Lyra forever.
The relationships of Supergirl are one of the show’s aspects that make it so strong; there is such a great dynamic between all of these characters and how much they care. The build up has really brought on a nice evolution throughout season two and will be interesting to see as it continues to the end. “Exodus” even takes a look at the relationship between Kara and Snapper, which has (possibly temporarily?) gone on a break as of right now. From a professional standpoint, Snapper is right and doing his job when he is so hard on Kara. He has been trying to mold her into almost the perfect journalist who can strongly represent topics and back them up with thorough sources. It’s clear that Snapper really loves Kara’s passionate personality and does want to be a mentor to her, but from a professional standpoint, he had no other options than to fire her.
While Snapper claims Kara is just getting lucky, viewers are aware of how legitimate her stories and sources are. It’s been an interesting conflict to see Kara balance her life as Supergirl with her professional environment, and it’s a story line that will be fun to watch develop into the show’s future. Kara definitely has what it takes to become a great legitimate journalist, but she definitely still has tons of room to grow; however, it seems like eventually she will be blogging about so many stories that turn out to be truthful and completely accurate that eventually Snapper will have to learn to trust her. The two characters have a really great dynamic so far, but don’t sleep on how much of an impact Snapper has on the person and hero Kara is developing into.
Supergirl is putting together some really great episodes this season and it only continues to build it’s story and characters each week. The show finds a way to stay emotionally heavy while keeping the plot and pacing moving along well and not inserting cheap drama or one-off stories too much to feel like they are holding the show back. With the mysterious aliens now orbiting right outside of the Earth’s atmosphere and looking to land or attack soon, it will, once again, bring a very interesting dynamic to the show. Not only will Kara have to deal with CADMUS, but how will CADMUS deal with some new powerful aliens? Assuming they are Mon-El’s parents, will they be forced into a position to help their son and accept his new life on Earth? There is a lot happening in Supergirl and it feels like there is a ton of exciting events on the horizon.
Other Thoughts:
– Mon-El’s inability to pronounce anonymously is great.
– Fake news joke…. original.
– Alex with the crotch stomp hell yeah!
– Really happy to see Winn and Lyra back together, I absolutely love their relationship so far!
