I’m not normally a celebrity birthday announcer but there’s one day out of the year where I feel it’s important to wish someone a happy birthday, and that’s March 6th. So let’s give a round of applause to Shaquille O’Neal for living 45 years. You might be wondering why I always wish Shaq a happy birthday each year and the answer is simple: today is my birthday too. That’s not my way of trying to make public that I’m 38. If I wanted to do that I’d have gone on Facebook last week and started writing dumb messages like “one week to my birthday, better get fit!” so that every single person I don’t know anymore except on the internet says “Happy Birthday” to me so I can validate my existence.
Another shout out to Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour because he too has a birthday today. Gilmour turns 71. As far as other celebrity birthdays today I never really paid much attention other than these two guys. With regards to Shaq, I respect you immensely big guy. I respect you humor, your business acumen, care for the common man, honest approach to broadcasting, and for just being the lovable big fella you are. While I’ve never met you and don’t know you from a hole in the wall, a guy of your size, stature, and talent could have easily gone the “I’m better than everyone” annoying, conceited route. You haven’t. You’ve humbled yourself, poked fun at yourself but also had the confidence that you were the best. We should all aspire to that.
