Stephen Colbert and Ricky Gervais Debate God’s Existence on The Late Show

Stephen Colbert

One of the main reasons why The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is my favorite of late-night talk shows on the major networks is because Stephen Colbert doesn’t simply play games or perform sketches with his guests. Sure, Colbert will have fun with something like Big Questions With Even Bigger Stars, or he’ll prepare an elaborate musical scene with a pal like Jon Stewart, but for the most part, the most entertaining moments from his show happen when he actually sits down and talks with his guests about matters of substance, like his debate last night with Ricky Gervais over the existence of God.

It is well-documented that Ricky Gervais is an atheist, although during his and Colbert’s conversation he refers to himself as an “agnostic atheist.” Additionally, it is also well-known that Colbert is a proud Catholic, and he’s never been afraid to discuss his religion on air since beginning his Late Show tenure back in the fall of 2015, as he’s brought up his faith several different times, most famously during his interview with former Vice President Joe Biden.

With two men who feel so passionately about what they believe in (or, in Gervais’ case, what he chooses not to believe in), it’s easy to see how things could quickly get heated. However, Colbert and Gervais’ discussion remains incredibly civil throughout its entirety, and the Late Show host even gives his guest credit for making a couple of points that he was expected and could not refute. It’s a wonderfully engaging five minutes of talk-show entertainment.
