In this week’s episode of Lethal Weapon Riggs learns that sometimes the people we least expect are the ones who help us the most. While Murtaugh learns how important being Riggs partner really is.
When a party promoter, Adam Pressman is murdered outside of a nightclub Riggs and Murtaugh catch the case. They find out that he was involved with a chemist named Owlsly. When they find her, she and Riggs make a connection because they both prefer to stay in rather than to go out.
Owlsly tells them that Adam was approached by a Koreatown gang that wanted to distribute the drugs that she was making for the nightclub and he wanted her to increase production, but when she saw Adam get threatened she said no. While taking Owlsly to the station to look at mugshots, Riggs, Murtaugh and Owlsly get shot at by the Koreatown gang causing Owlsly to want to stay home even more.
Captain Avery brings in Detective Henry Cho to help Riggs and Murtaugh with the case. Cho and Murtaugh hit it off really well because they think similarly, unlike Murtaugh and Riggs. While Cho and Murtaugh go to see one of Cho’s informants at a club, Riggs brings mugshots to Owlsly.
Meanwhile, Murtaugh becomes upset with Riggs when, after texting him that he and Cho found their suspect Riggs does not text him back. As Riggs and Murtaugh are arguing a shoot out occurs and they lose their suspect. Murtaugh complains to Captain Avery about Riggs and Captain Avery tells him that he put Murtaugh with Riggs on purpose to help keep Riggs up right. (I really liked this scene because it lets Murtaugh know how important he actually is as Riggs partner. )
After talking to Dr. Cahill, Riggs decides to go to the dinner Trish had Roger invite him to early in the episode which turns out to be a blind date. (It actually really bothered me that Trish set Riggs up on a blind date when she knows what he is going through, dealing with the loss of his wife and child and I’m glad she apologized at the end of the episode.) The awkward dinner/ blind date is interrupted when Bailey and Cho call saying that both Owlsly and the DJ are in danger.
Riggs finds Owlsly unharmed in her secret crawl space while Cho and Murtaugh find the DJ hurt inside the club. After checking the DJ’s Instagram account they realize she knew Owlsly. Meanwhile, after getting Owlsly out of the crawl space she hugs him transferring drugs into Riggs system. This allows her enough time to get away after confessing to killing Adam.
Riggs makes it out to the street in time to see Owlsly being taken by the Koreatown gang and to jump on the car to try and save her. But he gets thrown off the top of the car and Murtaugh and Cho pick him up. After Murtaugh shoots the the tires out and the car flips over Riggs goes check on Owlsly and finds her sitting on a bench. He tells her he has to arrest her but she tells him he won’t have the chance because she took pills and is going to die.
(I said in the opening of this review that Riggs learns that sometimes the people we least expect are the ones who help us the most. I think he learned that lesson in this moment. As hard as things are in his life, he knew he did not want to go out like Owlsly did, and he even told that to Doctor Cahill. At the end I thought it was a very powerful sequence.)
Also, Cho offers to become Murtaugh’s partner but he turns him down. At the very end of the episode Riggs brings Trish wine and tells her there will come a time when he will need a push to get back into the dating world.
Overall I thought this week’s episode of Lethal Weapon was great and a really strong way for the show to start off 2017.
