American Horror Story Renewed for Season 7 at FX

American Horror Story: Roanoke, Chapter 3

FX revealed some spooktacular news for fans of American Horror Story on Tuesday. The network announced that it has renewed the horror anthology for a seventh season.

American Horror Story is currently in Season 6. This year’s Roanoke theme was kept secret until it premiered. Across all viewing platforms, the Season 6 premiere garnered 13 million viewers, ranking as the third most-watched opener for AHS, just behind the premieres of Freak Show and Hotel.

“Ryan [Murphy], Brad [Falchuk] and their team of remarkable writers have done an amazing job of keeping American Horror Story endlessly inventive, shocking and entertaining and we are honored to move ahead with them on the seventh installment,” said FX president John Landgraf in a statement. “The sustained success through six installments only proves how intensely the series resonates with fans. AHS confronts our deepest fears with unmatched suspense and style. Each new installment is a cultural event, hotly anticipated for its theme, imagery, cast and twists. We thank the creators and their team, the cast and everyone who has continued to make AHS such an extraordinary series.”

It’s not clear if American Horror Story Season 7 is the “secret season” of AHS that Murphy teased in an interview with EW.com.

“It’s my secret season,” Murphy said. “I’ve been working with a writer on a season that only he and I know. It’s like a two-year project that we’ll continue to work on the sly and not tell anybody.”

If Season 7 is the season that Murphy is referring to in the interview, then, similar to how Season 6 of AHS was promoted, we could be dealing with another mysterious marketing campaign for the show’s seventh season. However, there’s also a chance that this “secret season” could be a later one. Perhaps it will end up being Season 8? We’ll have to wait and see.

The current season of American Horror Story airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX.
