Director Gareth Edward Talks New Force Planet in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’

Ahead of the new trailer premiering during NBC’s 2016 Summer Olympics coverage on Thursday, director Gareth Edwards is revealing a few more details about his upcoming film.

While Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the first spin-off film to the main Star Wars franchise set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, will introduce us to plenty of new characters, we’ll also get to spend time on some new worlds never-before-seen in the Star Wars universe. One of these, the tropical Scarif, was discussed at a panel at Celebration Europe last month (you can see this planet in trailers and the film’s poster), and Edwards has also revealed more about another unknown planet, Jedha.

The new planet has been glimpsed in the initial trailer for the film, and it will feature again in the upcoming trailer on Thursday.

“It’s a place where people who believe in the Force would go on a pilgrimage. It was essentially taken over by the Empire. It’s an occupied territory…for reasons we probably can’t reveal…There’s something very important in Jedha that serves both the Jedi and the Empire. It felt very much like something we could relate to the real world.”

Jedha seems like an extremely interesting new location for the series, and I can’t wait to find out more. You can read more about what Gareth Edwards said about the planet over at Collider.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16, 2016. Are you looking forward to finding out more about the new planets in the franchise? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
