Silicon Valley Review: Richard Screws Up, Wins The Game of Chairs

silicon valley

Last episode it looked like Silicon Valley was gonna take a leaf out of Game of Thrones and organize a sort of Battle Royale between potential CEO candidates. I don’t really know why I expected the chair to play a bigger role here. In some ways it does. There’s literally no one to tell Richard what to do so it makes him the highest ranking officer. Meaning he can do whatever the hell he wants. So the first thing he does is fire all the stupid and useless marketing guys. Seriously, I have not seen the marketing guys do a damn thing and that’s something that has plagued the tech industry for ages. Companies these days devote more money to marketing a product than to build the actual product. It’s nice to see Silicon Valley address problems like that.

At this point the story branches out. On Richard’s side of things, he learns that a tech blogger is calling his tech ‘mediocre’ which hurts his ego. Richard gets very emotional here, which is punctuated by his signature blabbering. What does he do? Organize a meeting with her. Meanwhile he learns that Big Head got offered the job of CEO. Of course this sends Richard into a fit of rage right before the meeting.

At this point we learn that it’s all a part of ruse where Laurie wants to see how Richard reacts when she starts offering the job to everyone in Palo Alto. It’s revealed that Richard was the right candidate all along but they needed to show everyone that he was the right choice. But on the other hand, Richard mistakes the Reporter for PR and starts pouring his heart out saying some really nasty things about Laurie and Raviga. Of course, the reporter doesn’t stop him. When the real PR arrives, it’s already too late.

But Big Head arrives to the rescue. So he saw how Gavin tweaked the Hooli search engine to exclude all the terrible things blogs were saying about Nucleus. Obviously that is bigger than Richard’s rant so they tell the reporter about it in exchange for her burying the story about Richard.

Meanwhile, on Dinesh and Gilfoyle’s end, they’re selling everything that they had in the office along with all the hard drives. Gilfoyle accidentally sells Dinesh’s personal hard drive to someone which includes all the work he’s done. So Gilfoyle pretends to be a member of the geek squad and drills the hard drive essentially killing it.

The story arc of Big Head and Erlich felt totally pointless since ‘Bachmanetti’ doesn’t play a part in the main story…yet. I felt like it was quite a weak point in this episode and one we could have done without. Finally, it is revealed that they didn’t sell the chair. So Richard sits on it since he’s gonna be CEO soon. Turns out the chair’s just as uncomfortable as the iron throne. They also get an engineering team across the globe which means they don’t need office space anymore.

Best Moments:

  • “Everyone from this wall is fired. So enjoy being fired.”
  • “Well I don’t say that’s true”.
  • Richard venting his feelings at the reporter.
  • “No yeah, it was gone great. Yep. It had gone.”
  • “If you want to leave, you’re gonna have to run me over.”
  • And the chair giving Richard a hard time.

Silicon Valley airs Sundays on HBO at 10/9c.
