Aw shirt! Stay on your monkey funky toes as you watch the Lonely Island perform with Jimmy and the Roots on the now classic Tonight Show classroom instruments. “I’m On A Boat” was a Lonely Island hit from a 2009 SNL episode featuring T-Pain on vocals but given the whole classroom vibe, they cleaned up the lyrics to make it more kid friendly.
Andy Samberg was the first guest interviewed after the video debut and he talked about their particular choice of words (“Mickey fickey”) in place of the repeated curse word. Seriously now, I’d kill for a whole album of The Lonely Island classroom version songs. Even Tariq’s bleeped (and not edited) mermaid line from T-Pain’s part in the original was hilarious.
There’s so much to love about The Lonely Island, including their long con of casually mentioning Jimmy in interviews across the country on their press tour for Popstar. The supercut of clips featured such fabricated gems of all things “as Jimmy Fallon would say,” like “un elefante no es perro” and “you can’t teach a horse to read Braille.” Keep in mind they did this while keeping a straight face in all the interviews and managing to somehow make the Fallon reference fit in context. They’re truly comedic geniuses and this was only the press tour for the movie. I can’t imagine how much fun the finished product will be when it’s released in theaters on June 3rd.
Speaking of Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, I have my fingers crossed Jimmy has a surprise cameo since it seems like there’s already so many random celebrity cameos leaked. In the clip shown, Seal is performing as Samberg’s titular pop star character proposes to his actress girlfriend played by Imogen Poots. The cast list alone is already a real who’s who of comedy with names like Arnett, Forte, Hader, Rudolph, and Meadows attached in speaking roles. I can only imagine the crazy cameos that aren’t credited on the IMDb page yet.
As if that still wasn’t enough of Andy, he stuck around to play a game of Catch Phrase with Jimmy, Gigi Hadid, and Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals. Let’s just say not everyone understood the rules of the game and cheated so Andy and Gigi won by a technicality!
