Time’s running out on Quantico for Alex to put an end to everything once and for all, so let’s take a look at her latest efforts in this week’s new episode, “Closure.”
The episode opens with Alex driving through the city in the bomb-truck with Drew giving her instructions over the phone. She manages to get word to Shelby that she’s on with him, and the FBI works to track the truck after finding out about the bomb. Caleb’s mother, after hearing from Shelby, goes straight to Miranda with the news and forces her to release her son, and they all more or less agree that Caleb may be the only person that can help. Caleb is temporarily reinstated into the FBI in order to help out, and most of our former cadets come together to help solve this mystery. It also turns out that Drew isn’t really behind the voice speaking to Alex as he is currently tied up with Simon in a booby-trapped room. Simon manages to get away, but Drew sacrifices himself in order to warn Alex about what’s been going on. At the end of the episode, we find out once and for all who was behind the bombing, and it’s a reveal that I didn’t at all expect but that makes perfect sense.
Back at the academy, the cadets are only a week away from graduation. It’s time for them to get their field assignments, too, and Shelby attempts to get Caleb’s father to help her bring down her parents. She can’t solely focus on this, though, as everyone gets one final lesson in which they have to work old terrorism cases inside and out. The stress of the lesson and the impending graduation begins to get to each of the cadets in different ways, and Alex’s manifests through wanting to learn the truth about her father before she leaves Quantico. For the twins, it comes in the form of worry about success in the field, and, finally, Simon comes back into their lives in a pretty big way.
As it has over the past few episodes, Shelby’s story with her parents takes a prominent role in “Closure,” and it really helps to bridge the gap completely between the person that she is at the academy with the person that she is when we first reconnected with her after the terror attack months ago. I’m really impressed with the arc that the writers have given this character over the course of the season, and it’s going to be fun seeing how her story continues and her character evolves next year (if she makes it out of the season alive, that is).
All of the pieces are now in place for the season finale of Quantico next week, and “Closure” did a great job at setting up an explosive (pun intended) conclusion to the season. This was a very strong episode of the series, too, wonderfully bouncing back from the slump the show’s been in lately.
