One of the best parts of Stephen Colbert hosting The Late Show is that no bit of political absurdity from either the Republican or Democratic party goes unnoticed. Whether it’s Hillary Clinton talking about how she carries around a bottle of hot sauce with her, or Donald Trump being the real-life cartoon that we know he is, Colbert is always there with a good joke or sketch to make his viewers laugh. Last night, though, Colbert turned his attention not to Clinton or Trump or even Bernie Sanders; instead, the Late Show host focused on Ted Cruz and the Republican presidential candidate’s announcement that former candidate, Carly Fiorina, will be his running mate and, potentially, the next vice president.
So what’s the problem with Cruz picking Fiorina? As Colbert points out, it’s the hilarious fact that Cruz still believes he has a chance at winning the election after Donald Trump swept the primaries this past Tuesday. Even though it’s pretty clear that the 2016 election will be a showdown between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz still apparently believes he has a chance, and Colbert had a lot of fun cracking jokes about his big announcement (and about how slowly Cruz speaks).
Check out the two videos below, in which Stephen Colbert not only discusses Cruz choosing his “losing mate” but also gives some helpful advice to whoever does eventually become the next vice president.
Oh, and if you thought Colbert was only dishing out advice to possible vice presidents, think again. The Late Show host actually opened up last night’s show by picking his own VP, even though he emphasized the fact that he’s not actually running for president. Plus, Colbert also detailed the rest of his cabinet, and it’s quite impressive.
