Quantico Review: Learning to “Care”

Quantico, "Care"

Alex started to get some major clues in last week’s episode of Quantico, and it looks like she might be getting even closer this week. Let’s take a look at tonight’s new episode, “Care.”

The episode opens with Simon and Ryan in the future talking about what’s going on with Alex after the events of the past few episodes. At the same time, she deals with new orders from her mysterious caller. “Care” spends less time in the post-bombing timeline than the past few episodes have (unfortunately), but it still progresses that plot in a satisfactory way while tying in yet another piece of Alex’s in-show history. Simon continues to be the most interesting character on Quantico, and I absolutely love the character development that he’s getting in this storyline.

At Quantico, the cadets are each assigned work for one of the FBI’s various field offices. Alex continues to be a major focus here, and her relationship situation comes back into play now that Ryan is helping out at the academy. The lesson of the week has the cadets working to get back across the border in order to win priority choice for field offices, and it’s nice to have the action take place so far away from the academy. In some ways, I’m angry that Alex’s relationship drama is such a major focus on Quantico (because it adds a very soapy element), but it’s easy to see that, despite its sometimes unwelcome nature, it’s one of the strongest pieces of material that the writers produce. Whether that’s a positive or negative is up for you to decide. I will say that I much prefer Ryan to Alex’s new beau, but that’s probably nothing more than opinion.

“Care” also has a major focus on Shelby, whose parents want to meet her. It’s fun to see everything surrounding Shelby so out in the open, and it’s clear that the writers of the show have realized that she can be one of the strongest characters in Quantico‘s arsenal. Shelby has slowly grown into the most emotionally complex characters on the show throughout the season, and the strength that Shelby shows here is the simple result of great character development. It’s a bit heartbreaking to see how much she’s suffered when you see the conclusion to this episode, but I really can’t wait to see the ways that it alters her character going forward.

“Care” did a pretty good job advancing the plot of Quantico on both the pre- and post-bombing fronts, but it suffered a bit too much from its focus on the academy and relationship drama. The biggest saving grace for the episode was Shelby’s storyline, though, which has become one of the strongest aspects of the show.
