How to Get Away with Murder Review: “There’s My Baby”

How to Get Away with Murder

We’re almost to the end of the second season of How to Get Away with Murder, so let’s take a look at what happened in this week’s new episode, “There’s My Baby.”

The episode opens with Annalise fighting the previously hidden Phillip while Eve and Wes get in touch with the police. The man runs off before doing too much damage, saving Annalise’s life, but she’s definitely a little worse for wear than before. The interns are locked-down in the office in order to keep them safe, but Nate arrives to let them know that Caleb is now missing. Because of this and the release of the video, the ADA decides to question everyone that’s featured in the footage about what happened on the night of Annalise’s shooting. The team works well enough together at this point that they are able to get through the questioning without much issue, allowing them more time to figure everything out.

Ten years earlier, Annalise and, to an extent, Eve deal with the aftermath of the death of Wes’ mother. The biggest thing that they’re having to handle is the fact that Annalise believes the woman wouldn’t have died had Annalise not been required to intimidate her, so there’s a big emotional conflict between the two former lovers. Through the course of the flashbacks, we also get a great little look at Sam and his relationship with Bonnie, and we finally get some payoff for the reveal that Annalise was pregnant in the past. It’s a heartbreaking reveal, but it’s also one that”s necessary and helps to explain even more of Annalise’s character.

The biggest thing to happen in “There’s My Baby,” though, is Annalise’s disclosure to Wes about what really happened with his mother. Throughout the season, but especially in this latter-half, this separation between the two characters and the conflict that’s arisen surrounding Rose’s death has been a driving narrative force, and it will  be interesting to see where things go from here. So many of the decisions that Annalise has made have been due to this case that she was involved in at a crucial time in her life, and this payoff helps to explain so many things.

“There’s My Baby” was a solid episode of How to Get Away with Murder that did a lot to progress the stories of both the season and the series as a whole, and the episode’s reveals should add some needed depth to the narrative progression as we move forward. The final moment of the episode also provided a great bit of exposition while reintroducing a fan-favorite character that should play a big role in next week’s season finale.
