Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Episode 11 Review: “Bouncing Back”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.After a long, long, hiatus: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.EL.D. finally returned last night with quite the spring premiere as we pick up after the events of the mid-season finale last fall.

There were two major things that I was looking forward to see in the premiere, one was the debut of the Secret Warriors character (someone that I wanted to see since last June) Elena Rodriguez a.k.a. Slingshot. As someone who has become a bigger fan of super-speed, thank to Tuesday night’s prime speedster The Flash, seeing Slingshot being introduced was a lot of fun. While the super-speed effects weren’t anything new or mind blowing, it still looked good and it matched with the level of effects quality that we tend to see on this show.

Although the way Mack nicknamed her “Yo-Yo” (which is her real name in the comics) was a little bit of an eye-roller. The opening scene which is a flashforward to something bad happening in 3 months from in a space ship has me worried about Slingshot because of the floating cross. I’m even worried about Mack too and that he might be the one in the ship because of the connection they made in this episode. Even though I have seemed a little Inhumans-exhausted, her introduction and the continuing formation of the Secret Warriors was the refresher that I needed.

The other major element in the spring premiere was of course what has happened to Ward as the first Inhuman known as “Hive” has taken over his body and nothing about it looks friendly. Marvel’s version of Hive is someone that I’m not familiar with at all other than the fact that he was part of the Secret Warriors storyline, which makes sense for why that character was picked as the “first” Inhuman of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While it wasn’t anything bad, I didn’t get much of Hive’s presence in his first episode, but I know they are building up to something big. As a comic book geek, I just hope we get to see the actual Hive at some point, maybe a hint in his shadow where we “see” his real form.

This episode couldn’t be clearer about Mockingbird and Lance Hunter’s upcoming departure as Marvel’s Most Wanted, their spin-off, is coming up, which is why anything that happens to them from now on, doesn’t really have a huge effect. Although it makes me curious though if going after all these Inhumans and almost losing their lives because of that, will be their reason why maybe they take off, even though we still don’t know what Most Wanted is all about. We also deal with Fitz and Simmons that had, to say the least, some awkwardness to deal with after the events in Season 3A. But whether or not their “fresh Start” will be a success, remains to be seen.

Overall, this was a very solid spring premiere and even though the plot of tracking down Gideon did much for me, the ending of where they introduced that Talbot will be working with S.H.I.E.L.D. got me more thrilled for next week.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesday nights, 9/8c on ABC.
