From Dusk Till Dawn Season 2 Episode 9 Review: “There Will Be Blood”

From Dusk Till Dawn

After a season’s worth of buildup, we’ve finally reached the final two episodes (for now, at least) of From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series. Let’s take a look at what happened in the penultimate episode, “There Will Be Blood.”

The episode opens in 1912 as a miner (played to perfection by guest star Gary Busey) discovers a well of mystical blood that “infects” and changes him. Jumping back to the present, Carlos and Sex Machine inspect the site and the Santa Sangre that is there while Richie and Malvado discuss a deal that would get the source to Malvado instead. This season of From Dusk Till Dawn has done a great job of mixing all of these different characters together instead of simply separating them all, and it’s led to a ton of super fun interactions. Richie uses Kate’s (who has been brought to the temple) blood to see her story and find out the location of the well, and he (with Kate in tow) heads out to take what he wants.

As Richie makes his plans with Malvado, Seth tries to make away with all of the cash. He ends up getting knocked out by a Culebra, though, as we flash back to a 2008 conversation (at a strip club, no less) between he and Richie in which they lay out their life goals. Scenes such as this go a long way in selling the bond between the two brothers, which is something that we needed after the essential collapse of their relationship after the events of last season’s finale. Both actors play really well off of each other, and their brotherly chemistry has been one of the most consistent elements throughout the series.

After a scene reminiscent of Kate’s goodbye with Seth from earlier in the season, we get to see her truly team up with Richie for mutual benefit. Out of all the characters on this show, Kate Fuller is the one that’s interacted with everyone else and been involved in every single storyline. She started off with Seth, she worked for a while with Freddie, she helped out Carlos and Scott for a bit, and now she’s teamed up with Richie. Kate was one of the more complex characters last year, but she has had the best development this season, too. It’s been great getting to see this actress really come into her own, and I’m glad that the writers gave her so much to do when they could have just as easily written her off.

Her appearance here was brief (although she’ll play a big part in next week’s finale), but Demi Lovato joined the guest cast here in a really fun role. I can’t wait to see more of her (and, hopefully, Danny Trejo’s The Regulator) in the next episode.

“There Will Be Blood” set the stage for a great finale, and I can’t wait to see what happens next week, The stakes are much higher this year than they were in the first season, and next week’s episode looks to be an exciting end to the season.
