Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 3 Episode 3 Review: ”A Wanted (Inhu)man”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

This week’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. focused heavily on Lincoln, who is on the run from the ATCU, while Simmons struggles with being back in this world.

Elizabeth Henstridge stole the show this week with her portrayal of a Simmons who is suffering from the experience in the other world. While I had a lot of issues with Simmons in season 2, seeing the effect that this trauma have on her, was just heartbreaking. Iain de Caestecker also gives a great performance by being the more confident one and being there for Simmons. It’s in a way as if they have swapped positions, looking at where they were at the beginning of the series when Simmons was sort of the bigger sibling.

However, by the end of the episode she is determined to reopen the portal and get back to that world, meaning that instead of trying to move on, she wants to discover more about that world. It was a great ending to the episode, but it also felt like it took away the effect that we got from seeing her in those previous scenes. However, if getting answers is something that can help her move on, then I’m all for this story arc, plus I also want to find out where in Marvel’s name she went to!

Luke Mitchell got to shine a lot this week and as someone who appreciated his great performances on The Tomorrow People, it was great to see a Lincoln focused episode. While I didn’t think much of the little romance between him and Daisy, it was nice to see Daisy telling him that he was important to her when she had just been activated as an Inhuman and was grateful for that. Unfortunately, Coulson messes the whole thing up by deciding to work with Rosalind, due to her knowing about Daisy being an Inhuman too. I’m terrified to even speculate how this will play out in the coming episodes because I sense that there will be a lot of drama because of this.

Last, but not the least, the adventures of Hunter and May. First of all, seeing May having to watch Hunter getting drunk with his old mate was just hilarious. Since she was already having trouble understanding what they were saying due to their accents, seeing subtitles being added in for her POV, killed me of laughter that is something that you would only get on a Whedon show. Imagine if Spike, Wesley and Giles had a scene like that on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, the arc doesn’t remain 100% comedic as Hunter, whose quest was to get into Hydra to destroy it within, is forced to kill his friend in a fight to the death which gets him into the Hydra system. I think I need to see the next episode in order to get a better thought process of this arc.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs on Tuesday nights at 9/8c on ABC.
