Bob’s Burgers Season 5 Episode 16 Review: “The Runaway Club”

Bob's Burgers

Right off the bat, I could not contain my excitement about this Breakfast Club-themed episode of Bob’s Burgers. That also means that I couldn’t care about the Linda and Bob plotline, which was boring and uneventful. Honestly, I’m surprised they gave any time to the parents when The Breakfast Club plot was so flawless. In addition to the wonderful adaptation of the 1985 film, last night’s Bob’s Burgers also incorporated Project Runway, which is one of my favorite television competitions.

Instead of Claire, Alison, Bender, Andrew, and Brian, we’ve got the Belcher siblings, along with Tammy, Jocelyn, Jimmy Jr, and Zeke. The only inkling we get that they might fit into some of the Breakfast roles is Zeke walking into the school. After the initial drop off, however, the kids resume their typical personalities and drop the act.

The kids receive detention because Tina and Tammy both wore the same jelly bracelet and fought each other in the hallway, simultaneously involving everyone else. While they’re in detention, which is forcing them to miss the cotton candy festival, Mr. Frond tells them that “Fashion should be a form of expression, not violence,” and so the Project Runway shenanigans begin. No one is up for playing until he makes the reward for winning leaving detention three hours early.

While Mr. Frond explains the judges, who are the secretary, the wrestling coach, and the janitor Louise delivers the most subtle joke of the season. She says, “What the big three, aren’t they supposed to be in Milan this week?” It took me a minute to get it, because that’s where fashion week was just a few weeks ago, and I’m so glad I replayed it, because it was comedy gold.

Tammy and Jocelyn win the first round and gain immunity. The wrestling coach has Zeke and Gene wrestle each other to decide the winner. Just before they can finish, Mr. Frond has to shut down the entire operation, and they have to resume regular detention.

What an unexpected turn! Oh no! But of course Louise proposes a Mr. Frond versus the kids challenge with the janitor as the judge. The janitor has some demands! He gives them a scene and a story for their outfit and tells them to use trash to make him an outfit that will save his life.

The kids create an outfit made of lettuce for Gene, but they need the jelly bracelets to pull the look together. Of course, Tina and Tammy don’t want anything to do with it until Tina realizes how stupid the bracelet is and says, “I don’t need the sparkle jelly to dazzle. I dazzle on my own.” The kids win because their lettuce outfit is just fabulous, and they get out early to make it to the festival.

I was smiling ear to ear with the cotton candy version of “Don’t You,” and the Belcher kids dancing on tables with cotton candy. What a sweet episode of Bob’s Burgers!
