Decisions Made, Consequences Faced
Last week, the characters of Nashville made some crucial decisions, but that doesn’t mean they were all easy to live with. This episode shows that how each person chose to deal with their dilemmas will become a driving force for the rest of the season.
Rayna and Deacon’s Emotional Turmoil
Deacon and Rayna are both struggling immensely. The strain of the media scrutiny coupled with her feelings for Deacon have Rayna emotionally exhausted. What’s a country queen to do but write out her feelings in a song with her daughters? In any case, neither Rayna nor Maddie can figure out why Deacon suddenly went off the grid. Little do they know it’s because he is fighting for his life, and fighting with his sister over her being a liver transplant donor for him. For a while, it seems as if the family reunion is going better than expected; that should have been a sign it was too good to be true. Beverly turns out to be a liver match for Deacon, but refuses to do the operation because she doesn’t feel it will benefit her emotionally or otherwise. So now Deacon is in for the fight of his life, not just with cancer, but with struggling with what will happen to his family if he does lose the fight.
Gunnar’s Battle and Breakthrough
Gunnar actually does win his battle, and yes, an argument with a pre-adolescent definitely counts as a battle. He flies out to see Micah and get the boy to talk to him, and actually breaks through when he tells Micah stories about his real father. While it doesn’t erase the heartache they’ve both been through, Micah and Gunnar end up in a much better place knowing they will always have each other.
Sadie’s Struggle with Her Abusive Past
Poor Sadie could use someone on her side right about now, given that she’s doing just about everything to cover up her visit from her abusive ex-husband. Throughout the episode, she covers up the abuse with lies and a lot of makeup. She can’t keep going like this for long without someone noticing, though everyone’s so wrapped up in their problems, that actually could take a while.
Juliette’s Nesting Phase and Avery’s Support
Meanwhile, Juliette is presumably in the nesting phase of her pregnancy, determined to do everything herself, full speed ahead. Marrying Avery is, luckily, continuing to prove to be the best decision Juliette ever made, since he is the one person who is able to get through to her. Avery tells his wife that her work, her music, her life will all still be waiting for her until after the baby is born, and she will most likely have so much more creativity after that, so there is no need to push herself. Except don’t push her on the whole ‘caramels aren’t a healthy food source’ topic, since she’ll probably cut your hand off.
Teddy’s Desperate Move and Maddie’s Future
Finally, the story we saw coming a mile away reared its ugly head, as Teddy was forced to sign Maddie to Edgehill so that Jeff would not make his prostitute payments public. It’s clear that Jeff is unraveling, spitting out negative numbers like a broken slot machine, and doesn’t hesitate to use Teddy with his back against the wall. We’ll see what the Queen of Country has to say about this not-so-minor life change made for her daughter next week.
What do you think Maddie’s parents will do to get their daughter away from the corporate vultures?
