Hawaii Five-0 Season 5 Episode 12 Review: “Poina’ole (Not Forgotten)”

Hawaii Five-0

Welcome to paradise! Where there’s sun, surf, and oh yeah, murder; nothing the Five-0 team can’t handle. In his week’s episode of Hawaii Five-0, McGarrett pulls out all the stops to rescue his father’s car, Grace trains for a track meet, Grover’s daughter is haunted by memories of her kidnapping, and a neurosurgeon’s murder brings the team back in contact with Paul Delano, although all is not as it seems.

The murder of a neurosurgeon in a parking garage leads the team to her first patient of the day, Paul Delano. For those who need a refresher, Paul Delano is the brother of Frank Delano, a dirty cop who killed Chin’s wife as revenge for his incarceration. And as revenge for Chin killing Frank, Paul kidnapped Chin and locked him up in Halawa Maximum Security Prison, which resulted in a near fatal prison riot. Now Paul is still a ray of sunshine (“Should I not make it, I’ll be sure to say hello to your wife for you”), but his connection to the murder victim turns out to be purely coincidental. The doctor’s murder turns out to be connected to a different patient (also murdered), who confessed to her his suspicions that four of his childhood friends from a juvenile correction facility were murdered by a prison guard.

After trying and failing to question another guard working at the jail, and dodging some very impressive makeshift booby traps along the way, they are led to former prison guard Alex Mackey. Loving grandfather by day, cold-blooded murderer in between, Mackey is also extremely cocky, that is until the bodies of the four boys he murdered are recovered. Mackey goes to prison, and unfortunately, Delano recovers from his surgery.

In between solving crimes, Steve proves his skills at multi-tasking as he does his job, using all police resources to find his father’s stolen car, and proves why he’s the best uncle as he helps train Grace for a track meet. Of course, his multi-tasking starts Steve’s other half, Danno, on a rant about how worrying about “that piece of junk car” is ridiculous when he should have been with Grace. (On a sidenote, usually I’d say Danny was exaggerating, but seeing as how Grace was once kidnapped, and Danny’s brother was brutally murdered a few months ago, his attitude may be warranted.) All of this proves Chin’s point that this pair needs a few more sessions with their therapist.

In any event, the case of Steve’s stolen car becomes the case of Steve’s stripped car, which has been mercilessly ripped apart. As it turns out, the car was stolen by a homeless kid, who is on his own and was just trying to feed himself. Instead of punishing him, Steve makes a deal with him: Steve won’t sign the official complaint, so long as the kid helps him put the car back together and he stays out of trouble.

Elsewhere this week, Grover is tormented as his daughter continues to have nightmares about her kidnapping last year. Chin supports Grover and reminds him that all he can do is be there for his daughter. Grover promises his daughter that it will get better, and they will get through this as a family. By the end of the day, the case is closed, Grace wins her meet, Steve’s thief has a job with Kamekona, and Danny reminds Steve as they break bread/shrimp with the Five-0 family that he “likes fixing broken toys, huh?”

What did you think of the Five-0 Ohana’s strength this week?
