After last week’s great episode of Gotham, the Batman prequel drama continues to step it up in this week’s episode as it introduced a young Hush and the father of the Black Mask from the DC Universe.
To begin with, I want to focus on everything that was about Bruce Wayne this week because this was an incredible episode for his character. David Mazouz continues to blow my mind away in his growing acting and even though I wasn’t onboard with having a 12-year old Bruce part of the show, when the project was first announced, I love that he is a part of Gotham. We see him finally go back to school because you know, that’s what kids do because I was starting to think what the situation was with that for him. He is obviously struggling because how do you go back to living a normal life when your parents were murdered in front of you?
We meet Tommy Elliot, a classmate of Bruce and of course mostly known as the future Hush, a big Batman villain. Even though we didn’t get much of him as a character and more as an obstacle for Bruce, this is what I want so to see more of. I think it’s important for the show to have some of the famous Batman characters, whether they are villains or heroes, to be around the same age as Bruce. So far we know that in this universe, Penguin, Riddler, Harvey Dent (coming next week) and so on will all be older than the Batman.
So aside from Selina and Pepper Ivy, we now also have Tommy as another character close to Bruce’s age. Although that kid was one insensitive brat to say the least! I enjoyed seeing Bruce admit his inner anger and that he enjoyed hurting Tommy which is an Easter Egg to the violent side that we always see in Batman. The more I see of this interpretation of Alfred, the more I love him because he is so amazingly sassy. At the end of the episode, Bruce finally asks Alfred to teach him how to fight which Alfred agrees to and now more than ever do I want next week’s episode.
While Bruce was dealing with his things, Gordon continues to kick some serious butt as he and Bullock has to deal with Richard Sionis who is supposedly either the father of Roman Sionis or Gotham’s complete own take on Black Mask. I doubt that this is THE Black Mask of the show and that somewhere, Roman does exist with us just getting a taste of what Black Mask is like in this world. One of the best scenes in the entire episode was when Bullock snapped at the entire GCPD station as they were treating him and Gordon like garbage because of the events from last week.
Despite their many differences, Bullock has finally embraced Gordon as his partner and seeing him stand up for him was a great moment for Bullock as a character. It makes him so much more than just the cocky, corrupt detective and Logue plays it beautifully. Overall, “The Mask” was another step-up episode for the show as it finally starts to flow really nicely with characters having developed so much throughout the first 7-8 weeks of the show. If I had anything to complain about, it would be Barbara because she continues to struggle for me in terms of what her role is on the show.
Gotham airs on Monday nights, 8/7c on FOX.
