Five weeks into Season 4, and Franklin & Bash is really rolling on all cylinders. The boys have returned to form, Stanton is becoming more like them every day, and all the relationships in the show have serious comedic value. This week’s episode was no exception to the re-established norm.
One of the most fun parts of Franklin & Bash to me is the guest stars who appear as judges and clients. This week, Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore, your honor) was the judge. This was great casting, but also fun because of all the Ghostbusters references I made while watching the show. The client was played by Devon Werkheiser, who rose to I-think-I-know-that-guy fame on the Nickelodeon show, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide. F&B always uses their guest stars well and I always enjoy seeing familiar faces.
The Franklin/Swatello relationship caused me some serious emotional distress in this week’s episode. I mean, each of them obviously enjoys the company of the other, and Jared played it too close to the vest. Of course, in the back five episodes, I’m expecting some kind of love confession. Maybe they’ll surprise me and it’ll be from Ellen? Doubtful, but it’s still an excellent, complex relationship, and really fun to watch on-screen.
The main plot worked well. Peter’s old high school flame’s son (Werkheiser) is in trouble, and he’s (maybe best of all) a principled journalist. Instead of taking the easy way out and getting his anonymous source to testify, Franklin & Bash rose to his level, and they played to win (as always). I’m always amazed at the integrity of our two heroes, masquerading as immaturity. Don’t get me wrong, I love the immature lawyers, and the banter this week was top-notch, but it’s nice to see them with some depth.
The story with Stanton, the landlord and the cello teacher, I could’ve done without. It was amusing to see that the cello teacher was a lawyer (plausible deniability with the landlord) but taking her on to a case just didn’t do it for me. It was amusing (as Stanton doing ridiculous things often is), but not as laugh-out-loud funny as the rest of the show is.
