Curry Barker’s transition from sketch comedy YouTube videos to Hollywood has already become iconic. The leap from short-form content to one of 2026’s most talked-about horror films is mesmerizing to witness. In turn, the conversation around Barker as an emerging force in horror cinema has been beyond dizzying.
His micro budget short films, comedy sketches, and a breakout found footage film led to Obsession, a low budget feature that exploded at TIFF and through a surprise theatrical run. Grossing over $370 million worldwide, Barker’s launch as a filmmaker made studios sit up and take notice. With that, offers have been flooding his way. And he just snapped one up. Here’s everything we know.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Lives On
Not long after Obsession’s staggering festival buzz, A24 joined the highly competitive bidding war for the distribution rights. While they lost out to Focus Features, they didn’t lose Barker. After winning the feature rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, they knew exactly who they wanted to occupy the director’s chair. The studio’s move was widely reported and positions Barker in a small but growing cohort of filmmakers who crossed from online short form into mainstream horror – think the Philippou brothers, who parlayed RackaRacka shorts into Talk to Me and formed a solid relationship with A24.
List most horror movie franchises, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre became a cog in the machine since its inception in 1974, spawning countless sequels, prequels and reboots. However, they have tapped Barker to put his own unique spin on the premise. Known for letting their artists flex their creativity, this film will be no different and is being described as a reimagining rather than a reboot or sequel.
Why Curry Barker Is Perfect for This Movie
Before writing a single word of the script, Barker stated that he “wouldn’t be doing it” if he didn’t have “a really cool take on it.” Promising a “raw and f***ed up” version of the story, we can assume he will bring his signature dark comedy to the mix. And it’s safe to say that A24 won’t be hitting him with tons of notes. After all, Barker’s entry point into Hollywood echoes the original movie’s director Tobe Hooper, who also turned a low budget horror movie into a massive global success.
A24 has built a brand around auteur driven, stylistically distinct genre films. So, giving Barker a major IP is a bet that his particular blend of crafts – tight economy, an eye for visual scares, and a background in sketch comedy that sharpens timing between dread and dark humor – can refresh a franchise while keeping it artful. Barker himself has said he’s obsessed with capturing the feeling of going down the wrong road and walking into sheer terror, suggesting his approach will lean into the original’s roadside horror dread rather than pure nostalgia.
Barker Has Another Movie to Box Off First
Curry Barker didn’t wait around to see how Obsession landed before he got moving with another project. While his first feature-length flick consisted of mostly unknown or emerging stars, his next film has a rather stacked cast. Also, Barker will grace the screen for this one, sharing it with the likes of Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World: Dominion).
Anything But Ghosts is a comedy horror that tells the tale of two fraudulent paranormal investigators who must square off with actual ghosts while dealing with the deception of their own shady business. Barker co-wrote the screenplay with long-time creative partner Cooper Tomlinson, who starred as Ian in Obsession. Tomlinson co-founded the YouTube channel That’s a Bad Idea, the platform that put Barker on the map.
While Barker hasn’t officially signed up to a sequel to Obsession, he has stated how there’s room for continuation. When speaking with Total Film, he stated how he may venture into an anthology series. He said: “Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin at it. That would be really cool.” Until that comes to light, the next best thing is Anything But Ghosts, which Barker has explained actually exists within the same universe as Obsession. Anything But Ghosts is currently in post-production and is slated for release in 2027.
