Bad Boys: Ride or Die has finally released a trailer! Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return for the fourth installment of the long-running franchise. An official synopsis for the film has yet to be released, though the brief logline on IMDB states that Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are now on the run. Bad Boys For Life was a surprise return for the franchise in a very positive manner.
Wisely, the same directors return for the latest entry, with several familiar and new faces returning to the misadventures of Mike and Marcus. With three sequels under their belt, the franchise has been enjoyable, but there have been some big misses along the way. Of course, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as their respective characters, along with Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, Joe Pantoliano, and Jacob Scipio. Here are the five best moments of Bad Boys: Ride or Die trailer.
Captain Conrad Howard Is Framed For Corruption
Captain Conrad has always been a great character in the Bad Boys series, which is why it was disappointing that they killed Joe Pantoliano‘s character in Bad Boys For Life. However, it did serve a purpose as it proved that anything could happen. Regardless, it’s great Conrad is getting some focus in the upcoming sequel and the story is certainly an interesting direction.
A cop being framed for something they didn’t do is nothing new in this world. But, I like the personal feel that these last two films have. We can dig deeper into the roots of Captain Conrad’s past and open the layers to some character development for Marcus and Mike. Plus, there’s always the possibility that Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah subvert some expectations as they did in the previous film. Either way, the set-up for Bad Boys: Ride or Die is promising.
Helicopter Fight!
Naturally, as important as the story has to be in this film, so does the action. Simply put, the helicopter sequence looks good. Given Will Smith’s storied career in the action genre, it’s not shocking that he pulls off something so smooth and dynamic. The directors seemingly do a nice job of keeping the fight grounded (which isn’t easy to do when it’s on the helicopter) and seemingly play with other elements beyond the bad guys themselves.
The tease that Marcus and Mike could fall out of the helicopter keeps the tension and drama high, and it also allows for some inventive action that masterfully combines all of these elements. This could end up being one of the best action sequences in a series that’s had plenty of great ones.
Mike and Marcus Are On The Run
Again, the story of cops being set up is nothing new. But this takes the characters out of their comfort zone. What made Bad Boys for Life so great is the grim and personal story that added dimension to Mike’s character. Hopefully, this story gives them some more development.
The chemistry between Marcus and Mike has always been the high point of this franchise, but plenty of their jokes hinge on characters who haven’t changed all too much since the first film. Marcus is still the goofy sidekick. Mike hasn’t changed much of his player and badass cop persona. This arc veers away from that angle and allows for some fresh material that Mike and Marcus can benefit from.
The Wild Shootout
This is Bad Boys, so you can’t go the entire film without some wild and outrageous shootout. Usually, there’s a nice mix of things going on: fun banter between Marcus and Mike, incredible and diverse action that plays up the elements of whatever environment they’re in, and balls-to-the-wall stunts that highlight why this franchise is rated R. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are testing the waters with newer camera angles and cinematography, which seemingly enhances the action sequence. This should be another joyous action scene as long as they can strike a nice balance that prevents audiences from getting confused or bored.
Are You Stealing Our Clothes?
I don’t highlight the comedy aspect much as sometimes it can be hit or miss. Thankfully, nothing came as close as bad two rats pounding away in Bad Boys II. Nevertheless, the comedy here seems sharp for the most part. Not everything lands on the comedic side in Ride or Die, but Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are such charismatic performers that they can make anything work. The scene of them trying to steal shirts genuinely drew a good laugh out of me, and it highlights again why these two actors are so amazing together.
